Serial Number Fitment Notice
Confirm fitment by engine serial number, horsepower, shaft location, seal bore, gearcase or powerhead diagram, and exact Mercury parts drawing before ordering. Mercury used many similar oil seals across lower units, crankshaft locations, pump housings, and jet drive assemblies, so horsepower alone is not enough to confirm fitment.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace this oil seal if there is visible gear lube or oil leakage, water intrusion, milky gear oil, damaged sealing lips, a loose or corroded outer case, shaft groove wear, or seal damage during teardown. It should also be replaced during related bearing, driveshaft, crankshaft, lower-unit, or jet pump service when the seal has been disturbed or removed.
Installation Notes
Inspect the shaft sealing surface before installing the new seal. If the shaft is grooved, pitted, corroded, or rough where the seal lip rides, a new seal may not stop the leak by itself. Lightly lubricate the seal lip before installation to prevent dry-start damage, and press the seal squarely into the housing using an appropriate seal driver or correctly sized installer. Do not hammer directly on the sealing lip or distort the steel outer case.

Parts Desk Insight
Oil seals should be matched by exact Mercury part number, shaft size, bore size, and diagram location. A seal with the same outside diameter can still be wrong if the lip design, width, spring tension, or installation depth differs. During service, inspect the shaft and housing carefully because leaks often return when a new seal is installed over a worn shaft surface.
