Start With the Transmission Plate

Transmission model, ratio, rotation, serial number, and part number matter. Many small parts look similar but fit only specific Borg-Warner, Velvet Drive, ZF, Hurth, Volvo Penta, MerCruiser, or inboard packages.

Inspection

Noise, Heat, Slipping, or Leaks Need Context

Burnt fluid, delayed engagement, metal in the oil, slipping under load, leaking seals, vibration, or overheating can point to alignment, cooler flow, fluid level, clutch wear, damper failure, or internal gearbox damage.

Record the model plate, ratio, fluid condition, leak location, operating temperature, and when the symptom appears before ordering parts.

How do I identify my marine transmission?

Start with the transmission identification plate. Record the manufacturer, model, ratio, serial number, rotation, and any part numbers before ordering parts.

Are Velvet Drive and Borg-Warner the same thing?

Many Velvet Drive marine transmissions are associated with Borg-Warner designs and parts, but fitment still depends on the exact model and series.

When should a damper plate be replaced?

Damper plates should be inspected when there is drivetrain rattle, vibration, spring failure, engine removal, transmission removal, or visible wear at the engine-to-transmission connection.

Can I use regular ATF or oil in a marine transmission?
