The Mercury MerCruiser Quicksilver 42121Q02 is a genuine Mercury Marine OEM aluminum sacrificial anode set used on select small Mercury, Mariner, and Force outboard lower units. These square-style anodes mount at the gearcase/cavitation plate area where the factory parts diagram calls for 42121Q02, helping protect the lower unit from galvanic corrosion by sacrificing the anode material before the gearcase casting is attacked.
Key Features
- Genuine Mercury Marine factory OEM aluminum anode set.
- Mercury/Quicksilver part number: 42121Q02.
- Common formatted reference: 97-42121Q02.
- Factory listing identifies this as an ANODE (ALUM) @2 set.
- Kit includes two aluminum anodes for compatible lower-unit mounting locations.
- Approximate anode dimensions: 1.66 in. L x 1.10 in. W x 0.42 in. H.
- Approximate mounting hole diameter: 0.28 in.
- Used on select small outboard gearcases where the Mercury parts diagram calls for this anode set.
Application Compatibility
Common where-used application groups include select Mercury, Mariner, and Force small outboards by serial number and gearcase configuration, including:
- Mercury / Mariner 6 HP applications where specified
- Mercury / Mariner 8 HP applications where specified
- Mercury / Mariner 9.9 HP applications where specified
- Mercury / Mariner 10 HP XR10, Marathon, SeaPro, and Viking applications where specified
- Mercury / Mariner 13.5 HP FourStroke applications where specified
- Mercury / Mariner 15 HP applications where specified
- Select Force 9.9 HP and 15 HP applications where specified
Use this anode set only where the Mercury/Mariner/Force lower-unit parts diagram specifically calls for 42121Q02 or 97-42121Q02.
Fitment Notice
Confirm fitment by outboard serial number, horsepower, gearcase style, anode shape, mounting hole location, and exact lower-unit diagram before ordering. Small Mercury and Mariner outboards can use different anodes depending on model year, gearcase casting, freshwater/saltwater package, and lower-unit configuration.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace sacrificial anodes when they are heavily pitted, loose, missing, cracked, or more than approximately 50% consumed. Anodes should also be replaced if they are painted, insulated by corrosion buildup, or no longer making clean metal-to-metal contact with the gearcase. Worn anodes reduce corrosion protection for the lower unit and nearby submerged metal parts.
Installation Notes
Remove the old anodes and clean the mounting surface before installation so the new anodes make direct electrical contact with the gearcase. Do not paint anodes. Paint, sealant, heavy corrosion, or poor hardware contact can prevent the anode from working properly. Inspect the mounting screw, threaded hole, cavitation plate area, and surrounding gearcase casting while the anodes are removed.

Parts Desk Insight
Anodes protect only when they are the correct material, shape, and mounting style for the gearcase. Aluminum anodes are commonly used across fresh, brackish, and saltwater environments, but the part still needs to match the exact lower-unit diagram. Always leave the anode bare and clean so it can sacrifice properly before corrosion attacks the gearcase.
