Engine Compatibility
This alternator is intended for select GM-based Mercury MerCruiser V6 and V8 sterndrive and inboard engines from the 1999–2001 production range where part number 862031T1 is specified.
Fitment depends on the exact engine model, serial number, belt system, pulley size, mounting bracket, plug style, and wiring layout. Confirm compatibility by MerCruiser engine serial number and Mercury parts diagram before ordering.
Serial Number Fitment Notice
Do not select this alternator by engine size alone. MerCruiser V6 and V8 engines may use different alternators depending on production year, belt style, mounting bracket, pulley diameter, amperage requirement, and electrical connector design.
This part is for serpentine belt applications with a 2.4" / 62 mm pulley. It is not the correct match for V-belt applications or engines using a different pulley and bracket arrangement.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the alternator if the battery is not charging, voltage output is low or unstable, the charging warning light remains on, the alternator bearings are noisy, the pulley is damaged, the case is corroded, or the unit has failed electrical testing. It should also be inspected if belts are slipping, batteries repeatedly discharge, or onboard electronics show low-voltage symptoms while the engine is running.
Before replacing the alternator, confirm the battery condition, belt tension, pulley alignment, ground connections, main charging cable, ignition wiring, and engine circuit protection.
Installation Notes
Disconnect the battery before removing the old alternator. Inspect the serpentine belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, mounting bracket, wiring terminals, plug connection, and charging cable before installation. A worn belt, weak tensioner, or poor ground can cause charging problems even with a new alternator installed.
Install the alternator using the correct MerCruiser service procedure and confirm pulley alignment before running the engine. After installation, verify charging voltage at the battery and inspect for belt tracking, noise, heat, and secure wiring. Use only marine-rated replacement charging components in engine compartments.

Parts Desk Insight
The important checks on this alternator are the engine serial number, belt type, pulley size, and electrical connection. A 70 amp MerCruiser alternator may look similar across several GM-based engines, but the wrong pulley or bracket style can create belt-alignment problems and repeat charging issues.
