Docking and mooring are not just about tying a rope to a cleat. A safe setup manages wind, tide, wake, current, chafe, hull protection, line angles, anchor scope, hardware strength, and how the boat can move while unattended. This guide explains how to choose fenders, dock lines, mooring lines, chain, cleats, buoys, whips, anchor markers, and the basic techniques that help protect the boat and the dock.
The Big Picture
Good Docking Starts With Controlled Movement
The goal is not to make the boat completely rigid. A boat tied too tightly can shock-load cleats, rip hardware loose, or fail when wake and tide change. A boat tied too loosely can hit the dock, rub a piling, or damage a neighbor's boat. Good docking gives the boat enough movement to rise, fall, and absorb load while keeping the hull away from hard contact.
Think of every docking setup as a system: dock lines hold position, spring lines control fore-and-aft movement, fenders protect the hull, chafe gear protects rope, cleats and chocks lead loads safely, and the boat's freeboard, windage, and slip layout decide where everything should go.
Dock and Mooring Lines
Choosing Line Diameter, Length, Material, and Layout
Dock lines are usually used for slips, docks, piers, pilings, fuel stops, rafting, and short-term tie-ups. Mooring lines are usually heavier-duty lines or pendants used for mooring buoys, mooring fields, longer-term exposure, and stronger loads. Nylon is common because it stretches and absorbs shock. Polyester has less stretch and good UV resistance, but it does not cushion surge the same way nylon does.
Bow and stern lines are often around two-thirds of the boat length as a practical starting point. Spring lines are often about the boat length or longer so they can run at useful angles. Keep longer spare lines aboard for rafting, storm prep, unfamiliar docks, pilings, locks, towing assistance, and temporary mooring setups.
Fenders and Bumpers
How to Choose and Place Boat Fenders
Many boaters call them bumpers, but on boats they are usually called fenders. Fenders protect the hull from docks, pilings, seawalls, and other boats. They do not hold the boat in place; properly set lines do that. A good fender setup places cushioning where contact is likely and adjusts height for the dock edge, piling, freeboard, tide, wake, and hull shape.
Cylindrical fenders
Common all-around fenders for slips, fuel docks, raft-ups, and temporary protection. They can be hung vertically or horizontally depending on the contact point.
Round fenders
Useful for larger boats, heavy contact areas, rafting, locks, and situations where the boat may roll against a piling or wall.
Flat or specialty fenders
Helpful for swim platforms, low freeboard, tenders, pilings, or tight storage areas where standard fenders do not sit well.
Carry more fenders than the minimum. A common setup uses at least three on the docking side, with extras for pilings, rafting, windy approaches, or unfamiliar docks. The first fender should protect the widest part of the hull, not simply hang from the closest rail.
Anchor Chain
Choosing Chain Length and Chain Diameter
Anchor chain adds weight near the anchor, helps the anchor set, lowers the pull angle, resists abrasion on the bottom, and protects rope rode from rocks, shells, coral, and rough seabed. The right chain depends on boat size, anchor size, windlass gypsy, locker capacity, anchoring depth, bottom conditions, and whether the boat uses all-chain rode or a rope-and-chain setup.
How much chain?
For small boats using rope rode, a common starting point is several feet of chain near the anchor, often at least the boat length in more serious setups. Cruising boats may use much more chain or all-chain rode. More chain helps holding and abrasion resistance, but adds weight and must fit the locker and windlass.
What diameter?
Chain diameter must match the windlass if one is installed. Common recreational sizes include 1/4 in, 5/16 in, and 3/8 in, but the correct choice depends on boat size, chain grade, windlass gypsy, anchor weight, and expected loads.
If your boat has a windlass, do not guess. Windlass chain must match the gypsy exactly by size and chain type. A near match can skip, jam, damage the gypsy, or fail under load.
Buoys and Markers
Mooring Buoys vs. Anchor Marker Buoys
A mooring buoy is part of a mooring system. It marks and supports a fixed mooring connection to ground tackle on the bottom. A boat ties to the mooring pendant or pickup line, not casually to any random buoy. Mooring buoys are used when the boat will sit in one place without deploying its own anchor, such as a mooring field, private mooring, yacht club mooring, or approved harbor mooring.
An anchor marker buoy marks the location of your anchor. It can help other boaters see where your anchor is, help you retrieve a stuck anchor, or warn others not to cross your rode. It should be rigged carefully so it does not create a hazard, wrap the rode, foul the prop, or mislead other boats about where your boat is swinging.
Use a mooring buoy when
The mooring is designed, inspected, permitted, and rated for the boat and local conditions. Check pendant condition, chafe, pickup gear, and marina or harbor rules.
Use an anchor marker when
You want to show anchor location, support retrieval, or warn nearby traffic. Keep the marker line short enough to reduce fouling risk.
Use caution with either
Buoys can foul props, confuse traffic, or fail if undersized. Inspect line, hardware, flotation, and attachment points before relying on them.
Dock Whips
When to Use Dock Whips
Dock whips are flexible poles mounted to the dock that hold a boat away from the dock while allowing some movement. They are useful for small to mid-size boats at fixed docks where wind or wake tends to push the hull against the dock. Whips are not a substitute for lines, fenders, cleats, or common sense. They work best when properly sized for boat length and weight and when used with bow, stern, and spring lines.
Use whips when the dock layout and water conditions repeatedly push the boat into the dock, when the boat is light enough for the whip system, and when local rules allow them. Avoid relying on whips alone during severe weather, heavy surge, large wake exposure, or situations beyond the whip rating.
Cleats, Chocks, and Leads

Cleats need proper backing, fasteners, size, and placement. A cleat mounted only through thin deck material can fail when shock-loaded. Chocks and fairleads help guide lines without sharp bends or gelcoat damage. The line should lead cleanly from the boat to the dock without sawing across fiberglass, rails, corners, or hardware.
Tie-Up Technique
How to Tie Your Boat Up Properly
For most side-tie dock setups, use a bow line, stern line, forward spring, and aft spring. The bow and stern lines keep the boat near the dock. The spring lines stop the boat from surging forward and backward. The fenders protect the hull where contact might happen. The lines should be firm but not banjo-tight, with enough allowance for tide, wake, and floating dock movement.
At a fixed dock with tide, avoid tying lines so short that the boat cannot rise and fall. At a floating dock, movement is easier because the dock moves with the boat, but wake and wind still matter. For storms or long unattended periods, add lines, double critical lines, protect chafe points, and follow marina guidance.
Anchoring Technique
How to Anchor Properly
Anchoring well is a sequence, not a toss. Choose a spot with room to swing, suitable depth, good bottom, enough distance from other boats, and a safe escape path. Lower the anchor under control, pay out rode as the boat moves back, set the anchor gently, then back down enough to confirm it is holding.
Anchor choice depends on bottom type. Fluke anchors often do well in sand and mud. Claw and plow-style anchors are common all-around choices for many cruising setups. No anchor is perfect everywhere, so match the style to where the boat actually anchors.
