The Alpha One Gen II Aluminum Anode Kit Alpha1G2-Kit-AL is a complete sacrificial anode kit for MerCruiser Alpha One Generation II sterndrives. This aluminum kit is designed to replace the key factory anode locations on compatible Gen II drives, helping protect the aluminum sterndrive housing, transom assembly, bearing carrier area, trim rams, and lower-unit components from galvanic corrosion.
Aluminum anodes are commonly selected for saltwater and brackish-water operation, offering broad-use protection for boats that move between mixed water conditions. Confirm the sterndrive generation, serial number, trim tab style, and anode layout before ordering.
Key Features
- Complete aluminum anode kit for Alpha One Gen II sterndrives.
- Part number: Alpha1G2-Kit-AL.
- Alternate inventory references: A1G2KA and Alpha One Gen II Aluminum Anode Kit.
- Designed for 1991 and newer MerCruiser Alpha One Generation II drives where this anode layout is used.
- Typical Gen II serial-number reference: 0D469829 and higher.
- Aluminum/indium alloy sacrificial protection for saltwater and brackish-water use.
- Helps protect expensive aluminum drive castings from galvanic corrosion.
- Includes major underwater anode locations commonly replaced during seasonal drive service.
- Supplied with installation hardware where included in the kit.
- Cadmium-free aluminum formulation compared with legacy zinc-style anodes.
Kit Contents
Typical Alpha One Gen II aluminum kit layout includes:
- Gimbal housing anode
- Flat trim tab anode
- Drive shaft plate / ventilation plate anode
- Bearing carrier anode
- Trim lift ram anodes, quantity 2
- Required installation fasteners, where supplied with the kit
Confirm the exact kit contents against the package and your drive layout before installation. Some Alpha One Gen II drives may use different trim tab or plate-style anode configurations depending on drive setup, propeller clearance, and previous service history.
Drive Compatibility
Common application context includes:
- MerCruiser Alpha One Generation II sterndrives.
- Typical production range: 1991 and newer.
- Typical serial-number reference: 0D469829 and higher.
- Saltwater and brackish-water boats requiring aluminum sacrificial protection.
- Drives using the matching gimbal housing, trim tab, drive plate, bearing carrier, and trim ram anode configuration.
This kit is not for Alpha One Gen I, Bravo, Blackhawk, outboard, or non-MerCruiser drive applications unless the parts diagram confirms the same anode layout.
Fitment Notice
Confirm fitment by sterndrive serial number, drive generation, anode material requirement, trim tab style, bearing carrier layout, mounting-hole pattern, and factory parts diagram before ordering. Alpha One Gen I and Alpha One Gen II kits are different and should not be interchanged.
Use aluminum anodes where the boat's water conditions call for aluminum protection. For freshwater-only operation, magnesium is commonly used instead. For traditional saltwater-only applications, zinc may also be used where specified. Correct anode material is important for proper corrosion protection.
When This Kit Needs Replacement
Replace anodes when they are heavily pitted, loose, missing, damaged, scaled over, or approximately half consumed. Anodes should also be inspected during spring commissioning, fall haul-out, winterization, gear lube service, propeller service, and any time corrosion, bubbling paint, white powdering, or unusual metal loss appears on the drive.
Do not wait until an anode is completely gone. Once the sacrificial metal is consumed, the sterndrive housing, trim rams, bearing carrier, and underwater hardware become more exposed to corrosion.
Installation Notes
Remove the old anodes and clean each mounting surface down to bare metal before installing the new kit. Sacrificial anodes must have direct metal-to-metal contact with the drive to work properly. Paint, corrosion, marine growth, sealant, or heavy scale under the anode can insulate it and reduce protection.
Do not paint anodes. Antifouling paint, primer, clear coat, or other coatings over the anode surface prevent the water from contacting the sacrificial metal. Tighten all hardware securely and inspect bonding continuity where applicable.
After installation, recheck the anodes once the boat has been back in the water, especially if the vessel is kept in a marina with shore power, nearby steel structures, or known stray-current concerns.

Parts Desk Insight
The two most important checks are drive generation and water type. Alpha One Gen II drives use a different anode layout than Alpha One Gen I drives, and aluminum, zinc, and magnesium anodes are not selected the same way. For the best protection, match the kit to the drive serial number, clean every contact surface to bare metal, and never paint the anodes.
