The Martyr ALU-A1KA is an aluminum sacrificial anode kit for MerCruiser Alpha One Generation I sterndrives. This kit is designed to replace key factory anode locations on compatible Alpha One Gen I drives, helping protect the aluminum drive housing, gimbal area, trim tab location, and underwater hardware from galvanic corrosion.

The aluminum alloy construction is suited for boats operating in saltwater and brackish water, especially where an aluminum anode kit is preferred over traditional zinc. Always confirm your sterndrive generation and anode layout before ordering.

Key Features

  • Martyr / Canada Metal aluminum anode kit.
  • Part number: ALU-A1KA.
  • Common cross-reference: CMALPHAKITA.
  • Designed for MerCruiser Alpha One Gen I sterndrives.
  • Typical application range: 1983–1990 Alpha One Generation I drives.
  • Aluminum alloy sacrificial protection for saltwater and brackish-water use.
  • Helps protect expensive aluminum drive castings from galvanic corrosion.
  • Replaces the common factory-style Gen I anode locations.
  • Includes installation hardware where supplied with the kit.
  • Cadmium-free aluminum formulation compared with legacy zinc-style anodes.

Kit Contents

Typical Alpha One Gen I aluminum kit layout includes:

  • Gimbal housing block anode — mounts under the gimbal housing / transom plate area.
  • Trim tab anode — mounts above the propeller and also functions as the steering trim tab where equipped.
  • Mounting hardware — required bolts/fasteners where included with the kit.

Confirm the exact kit contents against the package and your existing drive layout before installation. Some drives may have been modified, updated, or previously fitted with non-original anode hardware.

Drive Compatibility

Common application context includes:

  • MerCruiser Alpha One Generation I sterndrives.
  • Typical Alpha One Gen I production range: 1983–1990.
  • Saltwater or brackish-water boats requiring aluminum sacrificial protection.
  • Drives using the matching gimbal housing block and trim tab anode configuration.

This kit is not for Alpha One Gen II, Bravo, Blackhawk, outboard, or non-MerCruiser drive applications unless the parts diagram confirms the same anode layout.

Fitment Notice

Confirm fitment by sterndrive serial number, drive generation, anode shape, trim tab style, mounting-hole pattern, and water type before ordering. Alpha One Gen I and Alpha One Gen II anode kits are not the same. If your boat has a 1991 or newer Alpha One Gen II drive, verify the Gen II kit instead.

Use aluminum anodes for saltwater and brackish-water service where this material is specified or preferred. For freshwater-only operation, magnesium is commonly used instead. Correct anode material is important for proper corrosion protection.

When This Kit Needs Replacement

Replace anodes when they are heavily pitted, loose, missing, damaged, scaled over, or approximately half consumed. Anodes should be inspected during spring commissioning, fall haul-out, winterization, gear lube service, propeller service, and any time paint bubbling, white powdering, or corrosion appears on the drive.

Do not wait until an anode is completely gone. Once the sacrificial metal is consumed, the sterndrive housing and underwater hardware become more exposed to corrosion.

Installation Notes

Remove the old anodes and clean each mounting surface down to bare metal before installing the new kit. Sacrificial anodes must have direct metal-to-metal contact with the drive to work properly. Paint, corrosion, marine growth, sealant, or heavy scale under the anode can insulate it and reduce protection.

Do not paint anodes. Antifouling paint, primer, clear coat, or other coatings over the anode surface prevent the water from contacting the sacrificial metal. Tighten all hardware securely and inspect bonding continuity where applicable.

After installation, recheck the anodes once the boat has been back in the water, especially if the vessel is kept in a marina with shore power, nearby steel structures, or known stray-current concerns.

Parts Desk Insight

The most important check is confirming the drive generation. Alpha One Gen I and Alpha One Gen II kits look similar in purpose but do not use the same anode layout. For best protection, match the kit to the drive, use the correct anode material for your water, clean every mounting surface to bare metal, and never paint the anodes.
