The Shakespeare Galaxy 5396-AIS is a 4 ft marine AIS antenna designed for Automatic Identification System transceivers that require broader VHF bandwidth than a standard narrow-purpose antenna setup. It uses a center-fed 1/2-wave coaxial sleeve design with commercial-grade fiberglass construction, brass and copper elements, and Shakespeare’s Galaxy high-gloss white polyurethane finish for long-term marine durability. The antenna includes a stainless steel 1”-14 threaded ferrule, 20 ft of RG-8X coax, and a supplied PL-259 connector.

Application Compatibility
This antenna is intended for AIS systems on boats using compatible AIS receivers or transceivers. It is a good match for installations where a compact 4 ft antenna is preferred, such as smaller vessels, hardtop installations, arch mounts, and locations where a full 8 ft antenna is not practical. Shakespeare’s catalog lists the 5396-AIS as a Galaxy-series AIS antenna with a standard 1”-14 mount type and suggested mounts such as Shakespeare 4187 or 4187-HD.
Serial Number Fitment Notice
Marine antennas do not use engine serial-number fitment, but compatibility should still be checked against the AIS unit, mounting location, cable routing, connector requirements, and available antenna mount. Confirm that the boat’s AIS equipment uses the correct VHF/AIS antenna connection before ordering.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the AIS antenna if the fiberglass body is cracked, the ferrule is damaged, the cable is cut or corroded, the connector is compromised, or AIS transmit/receive range has become unreliable after checking the AIS unit and wiring. A damaged antenna or coax connection can reduce AIS performance even when the transceiver is working properly.
Installation Notes
Mount the antenna as high and clear of obstructions as practical for best AIS range. Use a compatible 1”-14 marine antenna mount, route the coax carefully to avoid sharp bends and chafe points, and install the PL-259 connector according to the connector instructions. Keep AIS/VHF antennas properly spaced from other antennas and strong RF sources where possible.
