The Shields 189883B, also referenced as Sierra 18-9883B-1, is a universal outboard rigging kit used to protect and organize engine control cables, fuel lines, steering hoses, electrical wiring, and other outboard rigging as it passes from the transom to the engine. The kit includes a black mounting flange and 5 feet of 2-inch Sternflex hose, giving the installation a cleaner finished appearance while helping shield critical rigging from abrasion, UV exposure, splash, and general marine wear.

Product Compatibility
This rigging kit is intended for outboard installations that require a flexible protective conduit between the boat transom and the engine. It can be used to help organize and protect:
- Outboard control cables
- Electrical harnesses
- Fuel lines where routing allows
- Hydraulic steering hoses
- Trim and tilt wiring
- Accessory wiring or small rigging bundles
The 2-inch hose size is intended for installations where the full rigging bundle fits comfortably inside the hose without crushing, pinching, or over-tight bending.
Fitment Notice
Confirm the required hose diameter, hose length, flange mounting space, transom opening, rigging bundle size, and engine steering range before ordering. The hose must allow the outboard to turn, tilt, and trim through its full range of motion without stretching, kinking, rubbing, or pulling on cables and hoses.
Do not overload the rigging hose. If the cable bundle is too tight, steering and engine movement can place stress on electrical connectors, fuel lines, control cables, or hydraulic hoses.
When This Product Needs Replacement
Replace the rigging hose or flange if the hose is cracked, sun-damaged, crushed, split, kinked, or worn through from chafe. It should also be replaced if the flange is broken, loose, UV-brittle, or no longer secures the hose cleanly at the transom.
A damaged rigging hose can expose wiring and control lines to abrasion, saltwater, UV, and accidental snagging around the splashwell or transom area.
Installation Notes
Route the hose so the outboard can turn fully port and starboard and tilt through its normal range without binding. Avoid tight bends, sharp edges, and contact with hot surfaces or moving linkage. Use proper marine mounting hardware and seal the flange area as needed to protect the transom opening.
Before final installation, check that all cables, hoses, and wiring move freely inside the rigging hose and are not pinched at either end. After installation, operate the steering, throttle, shift, trim, and engine tilt functions to confirm full movement with no restriction.

Parts Desk Insight
A rigging hose does more than clean up the look of the transom. It protects the cables, hoses, and wiring that control the engine. The key check is movement: the hose must be long and flexible enough for full steering and tilt travel without pulling on the rigging bundle.
