- Hot dip vs. electro-galvanized — it matters: Hot dip galvanizing applies a much thicker zinc coating than electro-galvanizing. In a saltwater anchoring environment where chain sits on the seabed and cycles through wet/dry exposure, hot dip chain lasts significantly longer. It’s worth the price difference for any vessel used in salt water.
- Grade 30 is general purpose — not high-test: Grade 30 proof coil has a lower working load limit than Grade 43 (high-test) or Grade 70 chain. For most recreational anchoring applications it is appropriate, but customers with larger or heavier vessels should verify the working load against their vessel’s anchoring requirements.
- Windlass compatibility — confirm gypsy size: The 1/2" ISO short pitch link is designed for windlass gypsies rated for 1/2" Grade 30 chain. Customers should confirm their windlass gypsy specification before ordering — mixing chain grades or link pitches can cause the chain to skip or jam.
