Johnson Pump 09-47165-01 Impeller Puller

Part Number: 09-47165-01 (also listed as 094716501)
Brand: Johnson Pump (SPX)
Official Product Type: Impeller Removal Tool
System: Raw-Water Cooling — Pump Service

The Johnson Pump 09-47165-01 is the dedicated impeller puller for F7-series raw-water pumps using the 09-1028BT threaded-hub impeller. It is designed to engage the brass threaded hub and draw the impeller straight out of the pump body without damaging the housing bore, shaft, or cam — the standard approach that is easy to damage with improvised tools.

Compatible Applications

  • Johnson Pump F7-series raw-water pumps using the 09-1028BT / 09-1028BT-1 threaded-hub impeller
  • Johnson Pump 189-091028BT1 flexible impeller (F7-series)
  • Seachoice F7 Impeller Kit 17789 (09-1028BT-1 / Jabsco 17937-0001)
  • Any Johnson Pump F7-series installation requiring removal of the 09-1028BT-pattern threaded brass hub

Note: This puller is specific to the 09-1028BT threaded-hub impeller family. For F5B / F6-series impellers with different hub threads, see the Johnson Pump 09-47154-01 Impeller Puller (for 09-812BT & 09-1027BT threaded-hub impellers).

Kit Contents

  • 09-47165-01 impeller puller body
  • Threaded puller adapter sized for the 09-1028BT hub

No additional tools required beyond a standard wrench.

When to Use This Tool

Use this puller whenever removing the F7-series impeller, including:

  • Annual impeller replacement (recommended interval)
  • Impeller removal after a dry-run or overheating event
  • Scheduled cooling-system service at 500–1,000 operating hours (or per manufacturer guidance)
  • Any time the impeller is corroded, stuck, or cannot be removed by hand

Service Interval

Johnson Pump recommends replacing F7-series impellers at least annually or per the engine manufacturer's maintenance schedule, whichever comes first. Using the correct puller at each service interval protects the pump housing bore and shaft from damage caused by prying.

Installation / Usage Notes

  • Isolate the engine starting circuit and close the raw-water intake seacock before opening the pump
  • Remove the pump end cover and expose the impeller face
  • Thread the puller adapter into the brass hub of the 09-1028BT impeller
  • Turn the puller body to draw the impeller straight out of the bore
  • Do not pry against the pump housing — this risks damaging the bore and cam
  • Inspect the pump bore, cam, shaft seal, and cover plate for wear before fitting a new impeller
  • Retrieve any missing blade fragments from hoses and heat exchangers if the old impeller was damaged
  • Lubricate the replacement impeller before installation

Parts Desk Insight

Best use case: This puller pays for itself the first time you use it on a corroded F7-series impeller. The 09-1028BT brass hub corrodes onto the shaft after a season or two, and attempting removal with pliers or a screwdriver frequently damages the pump housing bore — a far more expensive repair. Keep this tool in your engine-room kit and annual impeller service becomes a clean, quick job.

Common issues: The most frequent mistake is using the wrong puller — the F5B/F6-series puller 09-47154-01 has a different thread pattern and will not engage the 09-1028BT hub correctly. Always match the puller to the impeller part number, not just the pump model family name.

Technical FAQ

Q: Will this puller work on Johnson Pump F5B or F6-series impellers?
A: No. The 09-47165-01 is specific to the 09-1028BT threaded-hub impeller (F7-series). For F5B/F6-series use the 09-47154-01 puller.

Q: Can I reuse this puller across multiple service intervals?
A: Yes — this is a reusable service tool, not a consumable. It is designed for repeated use across annual impeller replacements.

Q: Do I need any other special tools to remove the F7-series impeller?
A: No special tools beyond a standard wrench to turn the puller. The 09-47165-01 is the only dedicated removal tool required.
