Ford-based PCM engines may use different belt lengths depending on alternator bracket, raw water pump style, pulley arrangement, and model year.
Match the belts being removed whenever possible, especially on older engines that may have had accessory brackets, alternators, pumps, or pulleys changed over time.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the belts if they are cracked, glazed, frayed, oil-soaked, stretched, squealing, slipping, missing ribs, or no longer able to hold proper tension. Replacement is also recommended during seasonal service, after a cooling system repair, after alternator service, or any time the raw water pump or accessory drive is removed.
A slipping alternator belt can reduce charging output, while a slipping raw water pump belt can reduce cooling flow and cause overheating.
Installation Notes
Inspect the pulleys before installation and remove rust, belt dust, oil, or debris from the belt grooves. Install each belt on the correct accessory path and set tension according to the PCM service procedure. Do not over-tighten, as excessive belt tension can damage alternator bearings, pump bearings, or accessory brackets.
After initial run-in, recheck belt tension and alignment. Inspect for belt dust, pulley wobble, squeal, or abnormal wear after the engine has been run under load.
