Overview
Pettit Splash Zone is a heavy-duty, two-component epoxy compound formulated for the harshest marine environments. It delivers an extremely hard, abrasion- and impact-resistant finish that protects metals, concrete, and wood both above and below the waterline โ including the demanding splash zone where surfaces cycle repeatedly between wet and dry. Mixed and applied as a thick compound, Splash Zone bonds tenaciously to a wide range of substrates and cures to a durable shell that resists corrosion, erosion, and deterioration in both salt and fresh water.
Key Features
- Extremely hard, abrasion- and impact-resistant finish
- Bonds to metal, concrete, wood, and fiberglass above and below the waterline
- Suitable for salt water and fresh water environments
- Two-component epoxy system โ full gallon kit (Part A + Part B)
- Thick compound consistency for gap-filling, patching, and heavy-build coating
- Not for use in potable water systems
- Not recommended for fully submerged patching or grouting applications
Compatible Applications
- Boat hull structural patching and protective coating
- Steel and aluminum hull corrosion protection in the splash zone
- Buoy, dock, and piling repair and protection
- Bridge abutments and concrete marine structures
- Below-waterline metal surface protection (excluding fully submerged grouting)
- Boatyard and marine contractor hull restoration projects
- Concrete dock and ramp surface restoration
Mixing & Application
- Mix Part A and Part B thoroughly according to manufacturer ratio before applying
- Apply by trowel or brush as a compound to the prepared surface
- Surface must be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, and loose material prior to application
- Abrade substrate to promote mechanical adhesion before applying
- Follow Pettit technical data sheet for pot life, recoat window, and full cure times โ these vary by temperature
- Protect from moisture exposure until initial cure is complete
Technical Notes
- Two-part epoxy systems have a finite pot life once mixed โ plan your application area accordingly
- Cure time is temperature-dependent; cold conditions significantly extend working and cure times
- Not a topcoat โ finish with an appropriate antifouling or topside paint for above-waterline UV protection
- Contains solvents; use in a well-ventilated area with appropriate PPE
- Not approved for potable water contact
- Not intended for fully submerged structural grouting applications
Parts Desk Insights
Best Use Case: This is the right product when a customer needs serious structural protection or repair on a surface that goes in and out of the water โ hull topsides near the waterline, metal pilings, buoys, and concrete dock edges. It excels anywhere that sees physical abrasion and repeated wet/dry cycling. Boatyards and contractors regularly reach for Splash Zone for hull patching and below-waterline metal prep before antifouling application.
Common Issues: The most frequent problem is customers applying it directly over unprepared surfaces โ adhesion failures are almost always traced back to inadequate surface prep. Remind customers to sand or grind the substrate and degrease thoroughly first. Pot life is also a common surprise: in warm weather, the mixed compound sets faster than expected, so mixing only what can be applied immediately is important. Customers expecting a paint-like finish should know this is a compound โ it goes on thick and may need sanding between Splash Zone and a topcoat.
