When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the distributor cap if the engine has hard starting, rough idle, misfire, hesitation, top-end sputtering, loss of power, moisture tracking, visible carbon trails, cracked plastic, burned terminals, corrosion, or repeated ignition arcing.
Replacement is also recommended during tune-up service, after water intrusion in the engine compartment, or whenever plug wires and rotor service reveal cap wear.
Installation Notes
Disconnect battery power before ignition service. Label spark plug wires before removal so firing order is maintained. Remove the old cap, inspect the rotor and distributor body, and check for moisture, corrosion, carbon tracking, or damaged terminals.
Install the new cap squarely onto the distributor and tighten the screws evenly. Transfer plug wires one at a time to maintain correct firing order. Pair with the correct rotor and inspect plug wires at the same time, especially on HEI-style male tower caps.
