Jabsco 1673-1001 Pulley-Driven Raw Water Pump
Part Number: 1673-1001 (Jabsco) | Brand: Jabsco
The Jabsco 1673-1001 is a self-priming, pulley-driven flexible-impeller pump built for continuous raw-water service in demanding marine environments. Its bronze body and stainless steel shaft resist corrosion in salt water and brackish water, while permanently lubricated ball bearings reduce routine maintenance. The neoprene flexible impeller handles fresh water, salt water, and engine-cooling circuits effectively.
At 8.9 GPM at 1500 RPM, this pump is well-suited for belt-driven engine raw-water cooling, deck and engine-room washdown, circulation, and general water-transfer duties on commercial and recreational vessels.

Confirm belt drive configuration, port sizing, and flow-rate requirements against your system specification before ordering.
Service — Impeller Replacement Kits
The 1673-1001 uses the Jabsco 1210-series impeller. Inspect the impeller annually and replace whenever reduced flow, overheating, or blade damage is observed. Two compound options are available:
- Jabsco 1210-0001-P Neoprene Impeller Kit — standard service kit for clean fresh water and salt water circuits
- Jabsco 1210-0003-P Nitrile Impeller Kit — use where the pump circuit sees regular fuel or oil exposure
If blade fragments are missing during impeller removal, inspect all downstream hoses, coolers, and heat exchangers before installing the replacement impeller.
Service Interval
Inspect the impeller at each season launch. Replace when any of the following are observed:
- Reduced raw-water flow at the exhaust outlet
- Engine overheating events
- Impeller blades cracked, hardened, torn, or permanently set
- Blade material missing — search downstream before fitting a new impeller
- Pump run dry (immediate replacement required)
- Scheduled annual maintenance interval reached
Installation & Operation Notes
- Set belt tension correctly before operation — over-tensioning accelerates bearing wear and shortens shaft life
- Close the raw-water seacock before servicing the impeller or disassembling the pump
- Do not run the pump dry — neoprene impellers overheat rapidly without water flow and fail within seconds
- Inspect the pump bore, cam surface, and cover plate at every impeller change for scoring or wear
- Lubricate the new impeller with glycerin or dish soap before installation — do not use petroleum-based lubricants
- Verify strong cooling-water flow at the exhaust outlet after startup

Parts Desk Insights
Best use case: The 1673-1001 is the right pump for belt-driven raw-water cooling on mid-size commercial, workboat, and performance inboard diesel installations where the engine does not have an integral pump and a dedicated belt-driven unit is required. Its bronze construction and self-priming capability make it reliable in continuous high-cycle service — far more durable than a standard utility pump in a salt-water environment.
Common issues: The two most frequent service calls on this pump are impeller failure from dry-running and bearing wear from over-tensioned drive belts. Dry-running — even briefly — can destroy a neoprene impeller before the engine temperature gauge responds. Always close the seacock and confirm water flow is established immediately after startup. On belt tension: check with a tension gauge if available; a belt that feels firm by hand is often already over-tensioned. When selecting the replacement impeller, choose neoprene (1210-0001-P) for standard clean-water cooling service, and nitrile (1210-0003-P) only if the pump circuit regularly sees fuel or oil contamination.
