Regulatory Requirements
Under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS Rule 25), a sailing vessel proceeding under sail when also being propelled by machinery must exhibit a conical shape, apex downward, in the forepart where it can best be seen during daylight hours. This signals to other vessels that the sailing vessel is using its engine and may not have the same maneuverability as a vessel under sail alone.
