About This Kit
The 64818T4 / 27-64818T4 is a genuine Mercury Marine / Quicksilver OEM bell-housing gasket set for early MerCruiser MC-I sterndrives. It contains the gaskets and O-rings needed to properly reseal the sterndrive-to-bell-housing joint whenever the drive is removed and reinstalled. These sealing components should always be replaced during any service that requires separating the drive from the transom assembly — reusing old gaskets or O-rings after removal risks water intrusion and leaks.
Important fitment distinction: The 64818T4 is specifically for the early MC-I drive generation. Later R, MR, Alpha One, and Alpha One Gen II drives use a different bell housing gasket configuration. See the related products section below for the current-generation equivalent.

When to Install a New Gasket Set
- Any time the sterndrive is removed from the bell housing — these are single-use components
- Existing drive gasket is torn, compressed flat, or deteriorated
- O-rings are flattened, cut, brittle, swollen, or missing
- Water intrusion found around the drive-to-transom joint
- Servicing bellows, U-joints, gimbal bearing, shift components, or transom assembly
- Drive reinstallation following any removal for any reason
Installation Notes
- Remove all remnants of the old gasket from both mating surfaces before fitting the new kit
- Clean the bell-housing and drive mating surfaces thoroughly — ensure they are flat and free from corrosion or pitting
- With the drive off, inspect the U-joint bellows, exhaust bellows, shift cable bellows, and water passage — replace any that show cracking or deterioration
- Check the gimbal bearing for wear and verify engine alignment while the drive is out
- Install all supplied O-rings in their correct positions before sliding the drive into the bell housing
- Slide the drive carefully to avoid displacing or pinching the O-rings during installation
- Torque all fasteners to the specifications and sequence in the applicable MerCruiser MC-I service manual
- Check for leaks after the first engine run

The single most important detail when ordering this kit is confirming you have an MC-I drive, not a later R, MR, or Alpha One. The gasket sets look similar and are priced comparably, but the MC-I bell-housing configuration is different from the later generation. The easiest confirmation is the drive serial number: 6225576 and below is MC-I territory. If your serial number is higher, or if your drive is labeled R, MR, or Alpha, you need the 94996T2 or 94996Q2 instead. We also strongly recommend replacing the bellows set while the drive is off — the labour overlap makes it the right time to do it.
