A proper oil or fluid service includes filters, drain plugs, gaskets, pumps, absorbent pads, inspection, correct disposal, and a final leak check after running the engine.

FAQ

Oils & Lubricants Questions

What oil should I use in my marine engine?

Use the viscosity and specification listed by the engine manufacturer. Marine gasoline engines often require NMMA FC-W oil, while marine diesels and OEM engines may call for specific diesel or OEM-approved oils.

How often should boat engine oil be changed?

Follow the engine manual. Many recreational engines are serviced annually or by engine hours, whichever comes first, and more often after contamination or severe use.

Is gear oil the same as engine oil?

No. Gear oil, lower unit lube, engine oil, transmission fluid, and hydraulic fluid are different products with different specifications. Use the correct fluid for the component.

Why is my gear oil milky?

Milky gear oil usually suggests water contamination. Inspect seals, drain plugs, gaskets, and pressure-test the drive or gearcase as recommended before refilling.
