AwlGrip Griptex is a polymer bead aggregate designed to be mixed directly into AwlGrip topcoats to create a durable, slip-resistant surface on boat decks, steps, cockpit soles, and other high-traffic areas. The coarse grit size produces a more aggressive non-skid texture than the fine grade β€” making it the preferred choice for working decks, boarding areas, and any surface where maximum grip is the priority.

Compatible Applications

  • Working decks and commercial vessel surfaces requiring aggressive traction
  • Boarding platforms, swim platforms, and ladder areas
  • Companionway steps and high-traffic cockpit zones
  • Any surface finished with an AwlGrip topcoat where maximum grip is needed
  • Brush and roller application (coarse grit is not recommended for spray)

System & Use

Griptex is an additive β€” it is mixed into an AwlGrip topcoat before application and is not used as a standalone product. The coarse grit size produces a more pronounced texture than fine grit, providing greater traction underfoot at the cost of a rougher surface feel.

Grit Size Guide

Kit Contents

  • One (1) 0.95 lb (approx. 431 g) bag of Griptex coarse-grit polymer bead aggregate
  • Topcoat not included β€” must be mixed with an AwlGrip topcoat before application

Dimensions & Weight

  • Weight: 0.95 lb / approx. 431 g
  • Packaged as a dry polymer bead aggregate

Application Notes

  • Mix Griptex into the AwlGrip topcoat at the ratio specified in the AwlGrip product data sheet for your topcoat
  • Coarse grit is recommended for brush and roller application only β€” not suitable for spray
  • Stir continuously during application to keep beads in suspension and ensure even distribution
  • Apply in consistent, overlapping passes to achieve uniform texture
  • Do not thin the topcoat excessively when Griptex is added β€” follow AwlGrip’s mixing guidelines
  • Surface preparation and priming should follow standard AwlGrip system requirements before applying the non-skid topcoat

Technical FAQ

Q: What is the difference between coarse and fine Griptex?
Coarse grit produces a more aggressive, rougher texture with greater traction. Fine grit produces a smoother, more refined surface that is more comfortable underfoot. Choose coarse for working decks and high-risk areas; choose fine for cockpits and areas with frequent barefoot contact.

Q: Can coarse Griptex be sprayed?
No β€” coarse grit is not suitable for spray application. Use fine grit (7301244) if spray application is required.

Q: Is this the same formula as the 3.9 lb bag (73013G)?
Yes β€” the coarse grit formula is the same. The 3.9 lb bag is a better value for larger projects.

Q: Can Griptex be used with other paint brands?
Griptex is formulated for use with AwlGrip topcoats. Compatibility with other paint systems is not guaranteed β€” consult the topcoat manufacturer before mixing with non-AwlGrip products.

Parts Desk Insights

Coarse Griptex is the right choice when grip is the priority over comfort β€” boarding areas, working decks, and ladder platforms are the most common use cases. The most frequent issue is customers choosing coarse for a main cockpit or salon sole and finding the texture too rough for barefoot use after the paint cures. If there’s any doubt, fine grit is the safer starting point for living areas. For larger projects, the 3.9 lb coarse bag (73013G) offers significantly better value per pound than this 0.95 lb size.
