What is the difference between radar and AIS?

Radar detects targets and weather by scanning around the boat. AIS uses transmitted vessel data to show equipped vessels with information such as name, course, speed, and position.

Do I need a compatible chartplotter?

For most modern radar and AIS installations, yes. Confirm that the chartplotter or MFD supports the radar scanner, AIS input, network type, and required cables.

Are radar reflectors still useful?

Yes. Passive radar reflectors can help make smaller boats more visible to radar, especially when the vessel does not have powered radar equipment.
