In high-current marina environments or areas with significant galvanic activity, check more frequently — anodes can deplete faster than expected depending on surrounding vessels and dock wiring conditions.

Zinc is the most commonly stocked transom plate anode alloy, but it’s also the most frequently installed in the wrong environment. Zinc anodes in freshwater don’t corrode fast enough to provide meaningful protection — if your boat lives on a freshwater lake, the magnesium version is the correct choice. For boats that trailer between fresh and salt, aluminum is the most versatile option. One thing we see regularly: customers replacing only the most visible anode and leaving a depleted one on the other side of the drive.
