Zinc anodes are the correct choice for saltwater and brackish water boating. If your boat operates exclusively in freshwater, aluminum anodes are actually more effective — zinc anodes can passivate (form a coating) in fresh water and stop working. Anodes should be inspected at least once per season and replaced when they are 50% depleted — don't wait until they're gone. A fully consumed anode means your drive is unprotected.
