Overview

Part Number: 17264T2
Brand: Mercury / Quicksilver
Official Product Type: Zinc Trim Tab Anode
Supersedes: 17264C1, F755457
GTIN / UPC: 745061120747

The Mercury Quicksilver 17264T2 is a genuine OEM zinc trim tab anode for select Mercury, Mariner, and Force outboard lower units. It serves a dual purpose: it provides the trim-tab geometry behind the propeller for steering compensation, and acts as a sacrificial zinc anode to protect submerged aluminum gearcase components from galvanic corrosion. Mercury parts diagrams list this component specifically as a zinc trim tab.

Key Features

  • Genuine Mercury Marine OEM component
  • Zinc construction — sacrificial anode for galvanic corrosion protection
  • Dual function: corrosion protection + trim-tab steering compensation
  • Mounts behind the propeller on compatible standard gearcases
  • Retaining screw is sold separately (Mercury part 858771, M10 × 30)
  • GTIN: 745061120747

Compatible Applications

  • Mercury / Mariner F40 FourStroke, 3-cylinder, long-shaft
  • Mercury / Mariner F40 / F50 / F60 FourStroke 996cc, standard 1.83:1 gearcase
  • Mercury / Mariner 50 HP 2-stroke, 3-cylinder, standard gearcase
  • Mercury / Mariner 55 / 60 HP 2-stroke, 3-cylinder, standard gearcase
  • Force 70 and 75 HP outboards
  • Mercury / Mariner 45 Jet and related gearcase configurations (serial-range dependent)
  • Mercury / Mariner 50 HP 3-cylinder (selected serial ranges)

Serial Number Fitment Notice

Fitment must be confirmed by exact outboard model, gearcase style, and serial number. Mercury produces several trim tab anodes that can appear similar. Propeller clearance and gearcase family also affect which trim tab is correct. Always cross-reference the Mercury parts diagram for your specific lower unit before ordering.

Dimensions & Weight

  • Weight: Approx. 1.22 lb (0.554 kg)
  • Packed dimensions: Approx. 9.5 cm × 8.9 cm × 15.9 cm (3.75 × 3.50 × 6.25 in)

System

Lower Unit / Gearcase — Corrosion Protection & Trim Tab System

When to Replace

Replace the trim tab anode when it has lost a significant portion of its original mass, shows deep pitting, cracking, or physical damage, or no longer provides an effective trim surface. Sacrificial anodes are designed to corrode in place of more expensive drive components — inspect at each service interval and replace as needed.

Service Interval

Inspect annually or at each lower unit service. Replace when consumed beyond 50% of original mass or when structurally compromised. Do not allow full depletion — unprotected aluminum is at risk once the anode is exhausted.

Installation Notes

  • Clean the gearcase mounting surface to bare metal before installing — bare metal contact is required for proper galvanic protection
  • Do not paint, coat, or prime the anode surface
  • Install in the same indexed orientation as the original trim tab
  • Torque the retaining fastener to Mercury specification for the applicable gearcase
  • Use only the correct Mercury fastener (858771, M10 × 30) for applicable gearcases

Technical FAQ

Q: Can I use a generic zinc disc instead of 17264T2?
A: Not recommended. The 17264T2 has a specific shape that provides both the correct trim-tab geometry for steering compensation and proper metal contact at the intended sacrificial location. A generic disc may not seat correctly, may alter propeller clearance, and may not deliver equivalent corrosion protection.

Q: Zinc vs. aluminum vs. magnesium — which is right?
A: Mercury specifies zinc for this part in saltwater and mixed-water environments. Aluminum anodes are typically used in freshwater applications when an aftermarket alternative is chosen. Always follow Mercury's material specification for your operating environment.

Q: Do I need to replace the retaining screw when replacing the anode?
A: Mercury recommends using the correct retaining fastener (858771) and inspecting it for corrosion or thread damage at each replacement. Replace if worn.

Parts Desk Insight

This anode is the right choice when the original gearcase specifically calls for 17264T2 and you want to retain both correct corrosion protection and the original trim-tab geometry. A quick serial number check at the parts counter prevents the most common ordering mistake — selecting a trim tab that looks similar but sits differently on the lower unit, affecting propeller clearance or steering compensation.
