The Velvet Drive 3000-166-001 is a bronze friction inner clutch plate for the forward clutch pack of select Velvet Drive 71L and 72L marine transmissions. This is an individual replacement plate — the forward clutch pack in these transmissions uses multiple bronze friction plates alternating with steel outer plates to transfer engine power when forward clutch hydraulic pressure is applied.
Velvet Drive service documentation lists 3000166001 as the original part number; 3000-166-001 is the current replacement-format reference for the same plate.

The same bronze friction plate is used in both the 71L and 72L families, but the clutch-pack plate count is different — five plates in 3018/3019 assemblies versus seven in 3007/3008 assemblies. Ordering by transmission series name alone risks getting the wrong quantity for a rebuild.
Also watch for the 72LX (assembly 3011), which uses a paper friction plate instead of bronze. It is a common mix-up when ordering by engine family, and the plates are not interchangeable. If you are unsure which assembly you have, the transmission identification plate is the reliable source — not the model number stamped on the engine.
