Serial Number Fitment Notice
Volvo Penta gasoline engines may use different pulleys depending on engine generation, accessory arrangement, and belt routing. Match 3860201 against the engine serial number and the appropriate belt-system diagram — do not select by displacement or appearance alone.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the idler pulley when inspection reveals any of the following:
- Bearing noise, grinding, or squealing
- Pulley wobble or excessive radial play
- Roughness or binding when rotated by hand
- Damaged, chipped, or heavily worn belt grooves
- Uneven belt wear or repeated belt tracking problems
- Heat discoloration around the pulley bearing
A noisy or rough pulley should be addressed promptly — a seized or misaligned idler can throw or damage the serpentine belt.
Installation Notes
Release belt tension before removing the pulley and record the original belt routing. Inspect the serpentine belt, tensioner, mounting hardware, and adjacent accessory pulleys during the same service. Replace a belt showing cracks, glazing, frayed edges, missing ribs, or contamination. Follow the Volvo Penta workshop procedure for fastener torque and belt installation. Do not apply lubricant to the pulley grooves or belt.
View the Volvo Penta serpentine belt and alternator schematic to confirm diagram position and routing.

Parts Desk Insight
Idler pulley bearing noise is easiest to isolate with the belt removed — spin each accessory pulley individually by hand to pinpoint the source. Always check the belt tensioner at the same time: replacing the pulley won't fix belt movement or tracking problems caused by a weak or sticking tensioner. If the belt has already been thrown or damaged, inspect the full accessory drive before reassembly.
