Before selecting parts
Identify the engine you have
Use the complete identification to select the correct generation, diagram and replacement part.
224-cubic-inch identity
Confirm the four-cylinder engine identity. Older horsepower badges can refer to different engine families and are not sufficient for a catalogue selection.
3.7L / 3.7LX carburetion
The documented parts-guide applications distinguish two-barrel 3.7L and four-barrel 3.7LX versions. Match the exact carburetor and engine serial number.
Model & installation
470 and related four-cylinder model names have serial-specific entries. Identify the installed cooling, ignition, drive and transom equipment.
GM 2.5L/120, 3.0L/140, inline-six 165 and GM V6 engines are distinct families. A 165 badge alone does not establish this four-cylinder application.
Send the complete engine-plate details and clear old-part photos. Match the installed fuel and cooling equipment, and include the separate drive or marine-gear plate when asking about those assemblies.
Documented installations
Boat examples
These examples describe documented engine options or installations. Boats may have been repowered or modified; an example does not establish present-day parts compatibility.
Glastron V-197, 1984 handbook
The factory handbook lists a MerCruiser 470 option and separately identifies the 470 as a 224-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine.
