AwlSpar is the right starting point for a traditional brightwork varnish job where you want a proven 1-part product that’s easy to apply by brush and builds quickly. The fast recoat time is a practical advantage — you can get 2–3 coats on in a day under good conditions, which matters when you’re working around weather windows. The UV package is genuinely better than commodity spar varnishes, which translates to longer intervals between full strip-and-recoat cycles. For the highest-gloss, most durable brightwork finish, the recommended approach is to use AwlSpar as the build coats and then topcoat with Awl-Brite Plus — the 2-part topcoat adds significantly more UV and abrasion resistance than varnish alone. If you want a single-product premium varnish without the 2-part topcoat step, the AwlSpar Premium is the alternative to consider.
