The Baldwin B1400 is a compact, full-flow spin-on oil filter commonly cross-referenced as an aftermarket replacement for Mercury Marine oil filter 8M0162831. It removes wear particles and other contaminants from circulating engine oil while maintaining the lubrication flow required by compatible four-stroke outboards.

The B1400 uses an M20 × 1.5 mounting thread and includes an anti-drainback valve to help retain oil during shutdown, along with a 14 PSID bypass valve. It measures approximately 2⅛ inches long by 2 21/32 inches in outside diameter and carries a 23-micron nominal filtration rating.

Key Features

  • Baldwin full-flow spin-on lubricating-oil filter

Engine Compatibility

Commonly used as a replacement for Mercury and Mariner FourStroke outboards originally specifying oil filter 8M0162831, including:

  • Mercury and Mariner 8/9.9 hp FourStroke models with the 323 cc engine
  • Mercury and Mariner 15/20 hp carbureted FourStroke outboards
  • Mercury and Mariner 15/20 hp EFI FourStroke models with serial number 0R833820 and above
  • Mercury and Mariner 25/30 hp EFI FourStroke outboards from model year 2006 and newer

Serial Number Fitment Notice

Confirm the complete outboard model, horsepower, serial number and existing filter number before ordering. Mercury and Mariner outboards with the same advertised horsepower may use different oil filters depending on displacement, production year and engine family.

Do not select this filter solely because it has an M20 × 1.5 thread. The filter height, gasket dimensions, anti-drainback valve and bypass-valve specification must also match the engine's lubrication-system requirements.

When This Part Needs Replacement

Replace the oil filter whenever the engine oil is changed or at the maintenance interval specified in the Mercury or Mariner owner's manual.

Earlier replacement may be appropriate following:

  • Extended trolling or low-speed operation
  • Frequent short operating cycles
  • Heavy-load or high-temperature use
  • Fuel, water or debris contamination
  • Long periods of seasonal storage
  • Internal engine repairs
  • Abnormal oil-pressure conditions

Replace the filter immediately if the housing is dented, corroded or leaking.

Installation Notes

Remove the old filter and confirm that its sealing gasket has not remained attached to the engine's filter mounting surface. Clean the sealing surface and compare the new filter's thread, gasket and body dimensions with the removed filter.

Lightly lubricate the new gasket with clean engine oil and install the filter by hand according to the outboard manufacturer's tightening instructions. Do not overtighten.

After installation:

  1. Refill the engine with the specified grade and quantity of oil.
  2. Start the engine and allow oil pressure to build.
  3. Inspect the filter and gasket for leakage.
  4. Shut the engine down and allow the oil to settle.
  5. Recheck and correct the engine-oil level.

Parts Desk Insight

The B1400 is a good dimensional cross-reference for Mercury 8M0162831, but the outboard serial number still matters. Several compact M20 × 1.5 filters look nearly identical, and the internal bypass-valve setting is just as important as the thread and outside size.
