Pettit Captain’s Varnish — Quart (1015CAQ)
Captain’s Varnish is a premium one-part spar varnish built on a time-tested formula of phenolic and alkyd resins blended with tung and linseed oils — a combination that delivers outstanding gloss retention, excellent flexibility, and long-lasting durability on marine brightwork. The warm, light amber hue enhances the natural beauty of wood with a classic, traditional appearance that looks right at home on any vessel.
The oil-rich formula penetrates well into bare wood and builds a tough, protective film that holds its gloss through seasons of UV exposure, salt air, and moisture. Easy to apply by brush with excellent self-leveling, it’s a reliable choice for both new finishes and maintenance coats on interior and exterior wood above the waterline.

Parts Desk Insights
Best Use Case: Captain’s Varnish is the right choice when you want a premium one-part varnish with a proven oil-based formula that builds a tough, flexible film and holds its gloss longer than entry-level varnishes. The tung and linseed oil blend gives it excellent penetration on bare wood and a natural flexibility that resists the cracking common in harder, resin-only formulas. It’s particularly well-suited for classic wooden boats and traditional brightwork where the warm amber tone and rich gloss are part of the aesthetic. For a lighter amber tone with a similar one-part approach, consider Interlux Schooner Gold or Interlux Schooner Varnish as alternatives.
