Davis Instruments 215 Illuminated Hand Bearing Compass
The Davis 215 is a purpose-built hand bearing compass for mariners who need fast, accurate magnetic bearings on landmarks, buoys, or other vessels. Its front-and-rear sight system makes taking a bearing intuitive — just align the sights on your target and read the heading directly off the liquid-damped card. The large, contoured handle is angled forward for a natural grip, keeping the compass steady even in a rolling sea. The illuminated version adds a high-efficiency LED system that floods both the compass capsule and sight vane with soft, even light for confident use after dark. Batteries included.

Parts Desk Insights
The Davis 215 is our top pick for boaters who take bearings regularly and want a dedicated tool that's fast and easy to use in any light. The LED illumination is the standout feature here — it's a meaningful upgrade over chem-stick alternatives when you need repeatable, reliable night use. The front-and-rear sight system is more precise for bearing work than a standard dome compass, making it a favourite for coastal navigators and racers. If you'd prefer a non-illuminated handheld option or a Safety Yellow case for high-visibility use, the Ritchie X11Y SportAbout Hand Bearing Compass is a strong alternative.
