Achieve a classic, hand-rubbed satin finish on your brightwork without the labour of cutting back a high-gloss coat. Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish delivers a warm, low-sheen finish straight from the tin — the kind of look that suits traditional wooden boats, teak trim, and interior joinery where a mirror gloss would feel out of place.
Built on Epifanes’ proven varnish chemistry, this formula offers excellent UV resistance and flexibility, protecting wood through the expansion and contraction of seasonal temperature changes. The 500ml tin is ideal for smaller brightwork projects, touch-up work, and detail areas where a full litre would go to waste.
Best Use Case
Best suited for teak handrails, cockpit trim, interior joinery, and any brightwork where a satin or matte appearance is preferred over high gloss. Also an excellent choice for final coats over a high-build gloss base when a rubbed-out look is the goal — apply over fully cured gloss coats for a professional two-stage finish. Works on bare or previously varnished wood that has been properly prepared.

Rubbed Effect Varnish is a single-part alkyd formula — it is not a polyurethane varnish. If you need to thin it for brush application, use the correct Epifanes alkyd thinner rather than a polyurethane-specific product. The Epifanes Brush Thinner for Polyurethane Varnish 1L (EPI-TPVB-1000ML) is formulated for polyurethane topcoats — check the Epifanes data sheet to confirm the correct thinner for this product before mixing. Apply in thin, even coats and allow full cure between coats; rushing recoat times is the most common cause of adhesion failure with varnish systems.
