Overview

The Faria F91106 Universal Pitot Kit is a complete pitot speed pickup solution for marine mechanical speedometers. Unlike the pickup-only version, this kit includes everything needed for a full installation from scratch: the pitot pickup, 20 feet of pitot tubing, and a cover plate β€” making it the right choice when replacing a full pitot system or installing one for the first time. The pitot tube mounts through the transom, uses water pressure from forward motion to drive the speedometer, and requires no electrical connections.

If you only need the pitot pickup and already have good tubing, see the Faria F91109 Universal Pitot Kit β€” Pitot Pickup Only.

Kit Contents

  • 1 Γ— Faria universal pitot pickup assembly
  • 1 Γ— 20 ft (6.1 m) pitot tubing
  • 1 Γ— Pitot cover plate
  • Mounting hardware

Key Features

  • Complete kit β€” pickup, 20 ft of tubing, and cover plate included
  • Universal fit β€” compatible with most marine mechanical speedometer systems
  • Transom-mount pitot pickup for water pressure-based speed measurement
  • No power required β€” purely mechanical, pressure-driven operation
  • Cover plate included for a clean, finished transom installation
  • 20 ft of tubing accommodates most typical routing paths from transom to helm

Compatible Applications

  • Any marine mechanical speedometer that uses a pitot tube for speed input
  • Faria Chesapeake SS mechanical speedometers
  • Faria Euro series mechanical speedometers
  • Other brand mechanical marine speedometers using standard pitot tubing connections
  • Outboard and sterndrive boats with transom-mounted pitot pickups
  • New pitot installations where no existing tubing or pickup is present
  • Full pitot system replacement where tubing is cracked, kinked, or hardened

Installation Notes

  • Mount the pitot pickup through the transom at or just below the waterline, facing directly forward into water flow
  • Install the cover plate over the transom fitting for a clean, sealed finish
  • Route the 20 ft of tubing from the pickup to the speedometer’s pressure port with no kinks or sharp bends
  • Avoid routing tubing in U-shapes or traps that could collect air β€” air pockets cause erratic or zero speed readings
  • Secure tubing with appropriate clips or conduit along the route to prevent chafing or vibration damage
  • Seal the transom fitting with appropriate marine sealant to prevent water intrusion
  • After installation, test at low speed to confirm the needle responds proportionally before running at full speed

Technical Notes / FAQ

  • What is a pitot tube and how does it work? A pitot tube is a small forward-facing tube that captures water pressure as the boat moves forward. Higher speed = higher pressure, which pushes against a diaphragm inside the speedometer to move the needle. No electrical connection is required.
  • Pitot vs. GPS speedometer β€” what’s the difference? A pitot speedometer measures speed through the water using pressure; a GPS speedometer measures speed over ground. In tidal or current conditions, readings will differ. Pitot systems are simpler and lower cost; GPS systems are more accurate for navigation purposes.
  • Is 20 ft of tubing enough? For most center console, runabout, and pontoon installations, 20 ft is sufficient to route from the transom to a helm gauge. For larger vessels or complex routing paths, additional tubing may be needed β€” measure your intended route before installing.
  • My speedometer reads zero after installation β€” what should I check? First confirm the pitot opening faces directly forward and is below the waterline when underway. Then check the tubing for any kinks, air traps, or disconnections at the gauge end. Blow gently through the tubing to confirm it’s clear end-to-end before testing on the water.
  • Can I trim excess tubing? Yes β€” cut to length with a clean straight cut. Ensure the tubing seats fully into the fittings at both ends after trimming.

Parts Desk Insights

Best Use Case: This is the right kit when a customer is doing a complete pitot system replacement or a first-time installation with nothing existing in the boat. The 20 ft tubing and cover plate eliminate the need to source components separately, making it the most efficient option for a clean start. If the customer only has a failed pickup but good existing tubing, direct them to the pickup-only version instead.

Common Issues: The most frequent post-installation issue is a zero or erratic speed reading, almost always caused by an air pocket in the tubing or the pitot pickup not seated squarely facing forward. Remind customers to route tubing with a continuous downward or level slope and no U-traps, and to test by blowing through the tube before taking the boat out. The second most common issue is customers ordering the pickup-only kit when they actually need tubing β€” this complete kit is the better recommendation for anyone starting fresh or unsure of their existing tubing condition.
