About This Cable

Mercury 8M0082488 is a genuine OEM Platinum Plus throttle and shift cable for Mercury Gen I mechanical remote control systems. At 15 feet (4.6 m), it connects the helm control station to the engine throttle and shift linkage, transmitting operator input for both engine speed and gear selection. The Platinum Plus construction features a pre-lubricated inner liner for low-friction operation, a stainless-steel cable core for strength and flexibility, and a UV- and abrasion-resistant outer jacket for long service life in the marine environment. This cable supersedes the earlier part numbers 897977A15, 881103A15, 877773A15, and 828921A15.

Compatible Applications

Designed for Mercury Gen I mechanical remote control systems only. This cable is not compatible with Gen II (4000/5000 series) or DTS (Digital Throttle & Shift) systems. Cable length and generation must both match the installed control system. Always confirm fitment using your engine model, serial number, and the Mercury parts diagram before ordering.

  • Mercury 40 HP and larger outboards with Gen I mechanical controls
  • Mercury Two-Stroke outboards with Gen I mechanical controls
  • Mercury FourStroke outboards with Gen I mechanical control boxes
  • Mercury OptiMax outboards with Gen I mechanical controls
  • Mariner 40 HP and larger outboards with Gen I mechanical controls
  • MerCruiser Pre-Alpha sterndrives with Gen I controls
  • MerCruiser Alpha One sterndrives with Gen I controls
  • MerCruiser MR / R sterndrives with Gen I controls
  • MerCruiser Bravo sterndrives with Gen I controls

Gen I control boxes include Mercury Commander and early side-mount control stations.

Serial Number & Fitment Notice

Control cable fitment depends on cable generation, cable length, and the specific control station and engine combination installed on the boat. A 15 ft cable is correct only where the routing distance from the helm to the engine matches that length. Always confirm 8M0082488 against your engine model, serial number, control station model, and the Mercury parts diagram before ordering.

Dimensions

  • Length: 15 feet (4.6 m / approx. 457 cm)
  • Generation: Gen I
  • Construction: Platinum Plus

Supersession & Part Number Reference

  • Current Part Number: 8M0082488

When to Replace

Replace the throttle/shift cable when the control system shows any of the following:

  • Stiff, sticky, or inconsistent throttle or shift action
  • Delayed or imprecise gear engagement
  • Visible cable kinking, fraying, or corrosion
  • Cable end fittings that are worn, cracked, or no longer seat properly
  • Any failure to return smoothly to neutral or idle position

Installation Notes

Route the replacement cable with smooth, gradual bends β€” avoid sharp bends or kinks that will cause stiff operation or premature wear. Confirm both ends seat fully and lock into the control station and engine throttle/shift lever before returning to service. Lubricate the cable ends per the Mercury service manual. After installation, test throttle and shift operation through the full range of motion at the dock before operating the vessel.

Parts Desk Insights

Best Use Case: The 15 ft length is one of the most common cable runs for centre-console and cuddy cabin boats where the helm is positioned forward and the engine is mounted at the transom. This is the right cable for a Gen I throttle/shift replacement on those installations. The Platinum Plus construction delivers noticeably smoother operation than basic replacement cables and holds up better over multiple seasons. Customers doing a full control service should also inspect the shift and throttle lever pivots, cable end fittings, and control station internals at the same time β€” a new cable on a worn control head will not deliver smooth operation.

Common Issues: The most frequent problem is ordering the wrong cable length. The routing distance from the helm to the engine must be measured along the actual cable path β€” not a straight-line measurement β€” because bends and routing through the gunwale add length. Too short and the cable won’t reach; too long and the excess creates bends that cause stiff or inconsistent operation. The second common issue is ordering a Gen I cable for a control system that has been upgraded to Gen II or DTS β€” the end fittings are different and the cable will not connect. Always confirm the cable generation by checking the existing cable or the Mercury parts diagram for the control station model installed on the boat.
