About This Product
Mercury 2-4-C Marine Grease with PTFE is a lithium-based NLGI No. 2 multi-purpose marine lubricant formulated to perform in the presence of water, friction, and heavy loads. The PTFE additive reduces friction at moving contact surfaces, and the extreme-pressure additives are suited to the high-load, water-exposed applications common in marine propulsion and steering systems. This is the 8 oz / 227 g squeeze tube format — the most common package for routine maintenance and single-component service.
Recommended Applications
Mercury specifies 2-4-C for general-purpose external lubrication of:
- Propeller shafts
- Steering cables and linkages
- Throttle and shift cables and linkages
- Remote-control mechanisms
- Swivel pins and hinge pins
- Tilt-lock mechanisms and tilt tubes
- Outboard motor swivel bracket and tilt pivot points
- Boat-trailer wheel bearings
Always confirm the correct lubricant specification in the applicable Mercury service or owner’s manual before applying to any component.
Important Compatibility Notice
2-4-C is a general-purpose external marine grease and is not Mercury’s answer for every lubrication point. Do not substitute 2-4-C where the service manual specifies a different lubricant. Examples of areas that require a dedicated product include:
- Internal needle bearings (typically requiring a specified needle-bearing grease)
- U-joints and gimbal bearings (Mercury specifies a dedicated grease for these)
- Internal engine assembly components requiring a different specification
Use the exact lubricant listed in your service manual for each application.
When to Apply
- At the scheduled lubrication service interval in your Mercury service manual
- When servicing a propeller shaft, steering component, tilt mechanism, or control cable
- When old grease has been displaced, washed out, or contaminated
- After disassembly of any component where 2-4-C was the specified lubricant
- Pre-season preparation and post-season lay-up service
Application Notes
- Remove old, contaminated grease and surface corrosion before applying fresh lubricant
- Apply only to locations where Mercury specifies 2-4-C
- Work grease into moving contact surfaces and splines where applicable
- Remove excess exposed grease after application to avoid attracting debris
- Follow the lubrication schedule in your engine or drive service manual for reapplication intervals
Technical FAQ
Is 802859A1 the same as 802859Q1?
Yes — 802859A1 is the Mercury-branded package and 802859Q1 is the Quicksilver-branded equivalent. Both contain the same 2-4-C formulation in an 8 oz tube and are interchangeable.
What did 2-4-C replace?
Mercury identifies 2-4-C as the current replacement for the discontinued Quicksilver Special 101 Grease 802865Q02.
Is there a larger size available?
Yes. Mercury and Quicksilver offer 2-4-C in additional formats including a 14 oz cartridge (8M0190471) and grease-gun kits (74057K5 / 74057Q5). A 3 oz Quicksilver tube (802861Q1) is also available for smaller jobs.

Parts Desk Insights
2-4-C is the go-to grease for most routine Mercury maintenance — prop shaft, steering, tilt pivot, control cables, and trailer bearings. The 8 oz tube is the right size for individual component service or keeping in a toolbox. The most common misapplication is using 2-4-C on gimbal bearings or U-joints, where Mercury specifies a dedicated grease. If the service manual calls for a specific product and it’s not 2-4-C, don’t substitute — the right lubricant matters on those components.
