What This Propeller Is
Mercury / Quicksilver 832834A45 is a genuine Black Max 3-blade aluminum propeller in 14 in. × 23 in. pitch, right-hand rotation. Black Max propellers are built from Mercury’s patented Mercalloy aluminum with a durable Phantom Black finish, and are Mercury’s core general-purpose aluminum propeller line for outboards and sterndrives. This propeller is supplied complete with the Flo-Torq II Hub Kit 835257K1.
Note: do not confuse with 832832A45, which is the 14.25 × 21 Black Max version.
Compatible Applications
Fitment is confirmed by engine or drive model, gearcase size, spline count, rotation, and wide-open-throttle RPM performance. Documented Mercury applications include:
- MerCruiser Alpha One sterndrives
- MerCruiser Bravo One sterndrives
- Mercury / Mariner 135 HP outboards (model and year dependent)
- Mercury / Mariner 150 HP outboards
- Mercury / Mariner 175 HP outboards
- Mercury / Mariner 200 HP outboards
- Mercury / Mariner 225 HP outboards
- Mercury / Mariner 250 HP outboards
- Mercury / Mariner 275 HP outboards
- Mercury / Mariner 300 HP outboards
- Mercury OptiMax outboards (gearcase and spline dependent)
- Mercury Verado outboards (gearcase and spline dependent)
- Mercury SeaPro outboards
- Mercury FourStroke / Command Thrust outboards (gearcase and spline dependent)
Do not order solely by horsepower. The same engine family can use different propellers depending on boat weight, hull design, gearing, load, and performance target. Higher-horsepower 19-spline / 1-1/4 in. prop-shaft applications may require a different hub kit.
Pitch Selection Note
At 23-inch pitch, this is the higher end of the Black Max range. Moving from a 21-pitch to a 23-pitch propeller will generally lower engine RPM at wide-open throttle and increase potential top speed — provided the engine can still reach its manufacturer-specified WOT RPM range. It will typically reduce acceleration and load-carrying ability compared to a lower-pitch propeller. Always verify WOT RPM after changing propeller pitch.
When to Replace
Replace or have the propeller professionally repaired if inspection shows:
- Bent or cracked blades
- Significant leading- or trailing-edge damage
- Severe corrosion or material loss
- Hub damage or excessive hub movement
- Persistent vibration after an impact or grounding
- Loss of acceleration or top-end performance following a strike
- Blade distortion that cannot be corrected by professional repair
Even minor blade damage can generate vibration that loads the propeller shaft, bearings, and gearcase. Inspect the propeller after any underwater impact.
Installation Notes
- Confirm right-hand rotation matches the installed engine or drive
- Verify the Flo-Torq II Hub Kit 835257K1 is correct for the specific engine or drive application — some higher-horsepower or specialized applications use a different hub arrangement
- Inspect the propeller shaft for fishing line, corrosion, or damage before fitting the new propeller
- Check the thrust washer and retaining hardware — see Thrust Washer 835467Q01
- Apply the specified marine grease to the propeller shaft splines
- Install and torque the propeller nut to the specification in the applicable Mercury service procedure
- After installation, verify engine wide-open-throttle RPM is within the manufacturer’s specified range
Technical FAQ
What is the difference between 832834A45 and 832832A45?
832834A45 is the 14 × 23 pitch version. 832832A45 is the 14.25 × 21 pitch version. The 23-pitch propeller will produce higher top-end speed potential but lower RPM and acceleration compared to the 21-pitch version. Both use the Flo-Torq II hub system.
What hub kit is included?
The Flo-Torq II Hub Kit 835257K1 is included. This is the standard hub for most Mercury and Mariner outboard and MerCruiser sterndrive applications using the 15-spline gearcase. Confirm the correct hub for your specific application before installing.
My engine won’t reach its specified WOT RPM range with this propeller — what should I do?
A 23-pitch propeller loads the engine significantly more than a 21- or 19-pitch version. If the engine cannot reach its specified full-throttle RPM range, moving to a lower pitch will reduce load and allow the engine to operate correctly. Running an engine below its WOT RPM range under sustained load causes excess heat and wear.
Is this propeller repairable?
Yes. Aluminum Black Max propellers can generally be repaired by a qualified propeller shop if the damage is limited to blade deformation rather than cracking or material loss. Repair is often economical for minor to moderate blade bends.

Parts Desk Insights
Best use case: 832834A45 is the right choice for lighter-hulled, higher-horsepower Mercury or MerCruiser setups where the boat can carry the additional pitch load and the goal is maximizing top-end speed. The 23-pitch Black Max is commonly ordered for centre-console and sport-boat applications running Alpha One or Bravo One sterndrives or higher-horsepower outboards where the engine can comfortably reach WOT RPM.
Common issue: The most frequent problem is ordering a 23-pitch propeller for a boat and engine combination that cannot actually reach its manufacturer-specified WOT RPM range with that pitch installed. This is especially common when upgrading from a 19- or 21-pitch propeller on a heavier boat or a lower-horsepower installation. Always check WOT RPM with a tachometer after installation — if the engine falls short of its specified range, drop one pitch size. A second common issue is hub slippage on a worn Flo-Torq hub, which can mimic under-pitching symptoms. Inspect the hub before assuming a pitch change is needed.
