About This Part

The 864960 / 32-864960 is a genuine Mercury Marine / Quicksilver OEM hydraulic hose that routes fluid between the trim cylinder and connector block on the starboard (right) side of MerCruiser R, MR, Alpha One, and Alpha One Gen II sterndrive trim systems. It operates in the down-pressure circuit β€” the hydraulic line responsible for pushing the drive down when trimming in. A failed or leaking hose in this circuit will result in loss of trim-down pressure and prevent normal drive operation.

Critical distinction: This is the starboard-side hose only. The matching port-side hose is 864959 / 32-864959. Although the two hoses are similar in length and appearance, their routing and fitting orientation differ β€” they are not interchangeable.

Compatible Applications

Confirm the drive model, transom assembly, trim-cylinder configuration, and hose position before ordering.

  • R Drive
  • MR Drive
  • Alpha One (Gen I) β€” 1983–1990
  • Alpha One Gen II β€” 1991 and later

Earlier part number 32-999021 (also formatted as 32-99902-1) was used across R, MR, Alpha One, and Alpha One Gen II applications and is fully superseded by 864960. On Alpha One applications, this hose is associated with trim-cylinder casting 14034 / 14034-1.

When to Replace

  • Hydraulic fluid leaking from the hose body, fittings, or crimped ends
  • Cracked, hardened, or deteriorated hose material
  • Corroded or damaged fittings
  • Visible abrasion, chafing, or kinking
  • Distorted or collapsed hose routing
  • Loss of trim-down pressure traced to the starboard hose
  • Damage found during trim-cylinder or transom assembly service

Hydraulic leaks in the trim system should be corrected before continued operation β€” running the trim pump with low fluid can damage the pump and cylinders.

Installation Notes

  • Relieve trim-system hydraulic pressure before disconnecting any hose, per the MerCruiser service procedure
  • Confirm the replacement hose is installed on the starboard side in the down-pressure position
  • Inspect the port-side companion hose 864959 at the same time β€” if one hose has failed, the other is likely at a similar age and condition
  • Check trim-cylinder fittings and the connector block for wear, corrosion, or thread damage
  • Route the new hose exactly as the original to avoid chafing against the drive housing or pinching during trim movement
  • Refill the trim reservoir and bleed the hydraulic system per the MerCruiser service manual
  • Cycle the drive through its full trim range and inspect all connections for leaks before returning to service

Cross-Reference / Alternate Part Numbers

  • 864960 β€” primary SKU (this item)
  • 32-864960 β€” Mercury-prefixed number
  • 999021 / 32-999021 / 32-99902-1 β€” earlier Mercury number, superseded by 864960
  • Sierra 18-2114 β€” aftermarket cross-reference
  • GLM 26190 β€” aftermarket cross-reference
  • Mallory 9-71508 β€” aftermarket cross-reference

Parts Desk Insights

The most common ordering confusion on trim hoses is port vs. starboard. 864960 is the starboard (right) side β€” standing at the stern facing forward, starboard is the right. If you’re replacing both hoses at the same time (recommended any time the trim system is opened), the port-side companion is 864959. We also see customers replace just the leaking hose without inspecting the trim cylinder seals β€” if the hose has deteriorated from age or heat, it’s worth checking the o-rings and seals in the trim cylinders during the same service to avoid revisiting the job.
