Ground Strap / Bonding Cable Assembly — Part 88238A20
| Part Number | 88238A20 |
|---|---|
| Brand | Mercury Marine / MerCruiser / Quicksilver |
| Official Product Type | Ground Strap / Bonding Cable Assembly |
| System | Sterndrive & Transom — Electrical Bonding Circuit |
| Length | 6.750 in. / approx. 171.5 mm |
| Quantity Required | 1 per applicable bonding location |
This is the genuine OEM 6.750-inch ground strap used in selected Bravo XR integrated transom and gimbal housing assemblies. It provides electrical bonding continuity between metal components of the sterndrive and transom system — an important part of corrosion protection and electrical grounding on any marine installation.
Note on length: Mercury uses multiple bonding straps of different lengths in the same transom area. The 88238A20 is specifically the 6.750 in. strap. A shorter 3.160 in. strap (88238A7) is used elsewhere in the same assembly and should not be substituted. Always match the OEM part number rather than ordering by appearance alone.
Part Number Reference
- Current OEM number: 88238A20 (6.750 in. ground strap)
- Related but different: 88238A7 — 3.160 in. ground strap used elsewhere in the same transom assembly — not interchangeable with 88238A20
Compatible Applications
Confirm fitment by drive or transom serial number and the applicable gimbal housing / integrated transom diagram.
- Bravo XR One — Integrated transom / gimbal housing assembly
- Bravo XR Sportmaster — Integrated transom / gimbal housing assembly
- Selected integrated transom assemblies using the same 6.750 in. bonding arrangement
When This Part Needs Replacement
- Cable strands are broken or frayed
- Either terminal eyelet is corroded or has separated from the cable
- Electrical continuity through the bonding circuit is poor or absent
- The strap is missing after transom or gimbal-housing service
- Corrosion has damaged the mounting hardware at either end
- The cable has been stretched or chafed by trim or steering movement

Installation Notes
- Clean corrosion from both bonding contact surfaces before installing
- Confirm the cable terminal eyelets sit flat against clean, bare metal at both ends
- Inspect the star washer (93702) and retaining nut (8267098) — replace if corroded
- Route the strap so trim and steering movement cannot pull it tight or chafe the cable
- Verify electrical continuity through the bonding circuit after installation
Parts Desk Insights
Most common customer issue: Ordering the wrong strap length. Bravo XR transom assemblies use more than one bonding strap in the same area — the 88238A20 (6.750 in.) and the 88238A7 (3.160 in.) are both used and look similar. Ordering by appearance or approximate length risks getting the wrong one. Always match the exact OEM number from your parts diagram.
Best use case: Ideal for Bravo XR One and Sportmaster owners doing a full transom or gimbal housing service, replacing corroded bonding hardware, or troubleshooting a corrosion protection or grounding issue on the sterndrive system. Bonding straps are often overlooked during transom service and should be inspected any time the gimbal housing is removed.
