U-Joint Cross & Bearing β€” Part 866136A01

Part Number 866136A01
Brand Mercury Marine / MerCruiser / Quicksilver
Official Product Type U-Joint Cross and Bearing Assembly
System Sterndrive β€” U-Joint / Driveshaft Assembly
U-Joint Style GKN
Bearing Cap OD 1.218 in. / 30.94 mm
Quantity in Assembly 2 (one per U-joint position in the shaft assembly)
Serial Number Break Bravo X / XR / XZ serial 0M750175 and above

This is the genuine OEM U-joint cross and bearing for the GKN-style universal-joint assembly used in Bravo X, Bravo XR, and Bravo XZ sterndrives from serial number 0M750175 and above. Two of these assemblies are used in the applicable U-joint shaft β€” one at each cross position. Because both joints operate together, both should be inspected and replaced as a pair whenever the drive is removed for service.

Important: This part is for the later GKN design only. Bravo X/XR/XZ drives built before serial 0M750175 use the earlier Meritor-style U-joint, which has a larger 1.328 in. bearing cap and is a completely different assembly. Using the wrong cross in the wrong drive will result in an improper fit.

Part Number Reference

  • Current OEM number: 866136A01 (GKN style, serial 0M750175 and above)
  • Earlier Meritor style: 862132T (serial 0M750174 and below β€” not interchangeable, different bearing cap OD)
  • Complete replacement assembly for Meritor-era drives: 865425A03 (search by part number)

Compatible Applications

Confirm fitment by drive serial number. The GKN and Meritor U-joint designs are not interchangeable even though they fit the same drive models at different production ranges.

  • Bravo X β€” GKN U-joint assembly, serial 0M750175 and above
  • Bravo XR β€” GKN U-joint assembly, serial 0M750175 and above
  • Bravo XZ β€” GKN U-joint assembly, serial 0M750175 and above

When This Part Needs Replacement

  • The joint feels rough, notchy, or binds when moved by hand
  • Excessive play is present at the U-joint cross
  • Bearing caps show corrosion or rust contamination
  • A failed U-joint bellows has allowed water intrusion into the joint area
  • Vibration or knocking is traced to the universal-joint assembly under load
  • The joint has seized or developed uneven movement
  • Routine inspection during drive removal shows bearing wear

Because two U-joint crosses are used in the applicable shaft assembly, both should be inspected and replaced together whenever the drive is serviced.

Installation Notes

  • Inspect both U-joint cross positions β€” replace as a pair if either shows wear
  • Inspect the U-joint bellows for leakage before reinstalling the drive
  • Check yokes and bearing bores for wear or distortion
  • Inspect the center socket (866137T) for wear
  • Verify drive alignment before final reinstallation
  • Follow the applicable MerCruiser service procedure for pressing and retaining the bearing caps β€” incorrect installation can damage the bearing bores

Parts Desk Insights

Most common customer issue: Ordering this part without confirming the drive serial number and U-joint style. Bravo X/XR/XZ drives split between the Meritor and GKN designs at serial 0M750175. The GKN cross (866136A01) has 1.218 in. bearing caps; the Meritor cross (862132T) has 1.328 in. caps. They look similar but will not fit each other’s yokes. If you’re unsure which style your drive has, check the serial number before ordering β€” or send us the serial number and we’ll confirm.

Best use case: Ideal for Bravo X/XR/XZ owners doing a full drive service, rebuilding the U-joint assembly after bellows failure allowed water intrusion, or addressing vibration traced to the driveshaft. Always replace both crosses at the same time and replace the bellows if there’s any sign of deterioration β€” water in the U-joint area is the primary cause of premature bearing failure on these drives.
