Arco 5389 Replacement Outboard Starter Motor
The Arco 5389 is a direct-fit replacement starter for Johnson and Evinrude’s smaller 2-cylinder outboard lineup, covering 25 to 50 HP applications from 1989 onward. Compact and purpose-built for these lighter powerheads, it uses a 9-tooth drive gear and installs as a straightforward OEM swap — no modifications needed. Whether your small-block OMC is used for fishing, sailing tender duty, or utility work, the 5389 restores reliable starting performance.

The 5389 covers the smaller end of the OMC outboard starter range — 2-cylinder engines in the 25–50 HP class that are common on aluminum fishing boats, jon boats, and sailing tenders. Tooth count (9-tooth) is the key spec to confirm against your existing starter before ordering; the similar Arco 5386 covers larger OMC applications with a 10-tooth drive. For V6 and V8 OMC loop-charged engines, see the Arco 5387. When replacing the starter, always inspect the solenoid — the correct unit for OMC outboards is the Arco SW268 OMC Solenoid (12V Grounded Base). The Sierra Starter Solenoid for Johnson/Evinrude is also a compatible alternative.
