Why SAE-90 Gear Lube Matters
The lower unit on an outboard or sterndrive operates under high load and in a water-exposed environment. Using the correct viscosity and formulation protects gears, bearings, and seals from wear and corrosion. SAE-90 is the standard specification for most Mercury and MerCruiser lower units — using an incorrect weight or a general-purpose gear oil can accelerate wear and compromise water exclusion.
