Sierra MP40960 Emergency Engine Cut-Off Switch with Lanyard – Conventional & Magneto Ignitions
The Sierra MP40960 is a complete emergency engine cut-off switch and lanyard kit designed for both conventional and magneto ignition systems. The lanyard clips to the operator and connects to the switch at the helm — if the operator moves away from the controls, the lanyard pulls free and immediately kills the ignition. It’s a critical safety device required on most recreational powerboats and a straightforward upgrade or replacement for aging helm safety systems.
The switch keeps the plunger depressed when the lanyard is connected, ensuring a positive, reliable connection during normal operation. A moisture seal protects the switch mechanism from spray and humidity, extending service life in the marine environment.

Parts Desk Insights
The MP40960 is the right choice when you need a complete cut-off switch and lanyard in one kit — ideal for new installations or when the original switch body is damaged or missing, not just the lanyard. The dual compatibility with conventional and magneto ignitions makes it a versatile fit across a wide range of outboard and inboard engines. If you only need to replace a lost or worn lanyard and your switch body is still in good condition, the brand-specific replacement lanyards are the more economical option: the Sierra MP28860 for Yamaha or the Sierra MP28880 for Johnson/Evinrude. For a universal kill switch kit with multi-key lanyard options, the Sea-Dog 10-Key Universal Kill Switch or Sea-Dog 7-Key Universal Kill Switch are full-assembly alternatives.
