The 5-gallon pail is best suited for service shops and marinas doing volume lower unit changes — not a typical single-boat purchase. If you're servicing your own vessel, the 1-quart is the right size for a standard lower unit fill. Premium Gear Lube (GL-5 / hypoid 90) is the correct spec for most standard outboard and sterndrive lower units — if your engine manual calls for hi-performance gear lube specifically, see the Hi-Performance Gear Lube instead. A gear lube pump is required for a clean fill; the Sierra Gear Lube Pump is sold separately if you don't already have one.
