The Steyr Motors 2178582-1 is an original full-flow spin-on lubricating-oil filter for select Steyr marine diesel engines. It removes combustion residue, metallic wear particles and other contaminants from circulating engine oil, helping protect bearings, cylinder components, the turbocharger and other lubricated engine parts.
This filter uses a 3/4"-16 UNF mounting thread and is designed as a routine service replacement within the Steyr engine-lubrication system.
Key Features
- Genuine Steyr Motors replacement lube-oil filter
- Full-flow spin-on construction
- Designed for select Steyr marine diesel engines
- Mounting thread: 3/4"-16 UNF
- Integrated anti-drainback and pressure-relief functions
- Helps control abrasive engine-oil contamination
- Suitable for scheduled oil and filter maintenance
- Steyr part number: 2178582-1
- Also formatted as 2178582/1 and 21785821
Engine Compatibility

Serial Number Fitment Notice
Confirm the complete Steyr engine model and serial number before ordering. Six-cylinder applications require particular attention because later MO6 engines and the MO286 and MO306 families may use a different oil-filter specification.
Do not select a replacement solely because it has a 3/4"-16 thread. The filter-body dimensions, sealing-gasket arrangement, anti-drainback function and internal pressure-relief specification must also match the engine's lubrication system.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the oil filter whenever the engine oil is changed. Earlier Steyr service documentation specifies oil and oil-filter replacement approximately every 150 operating hours or once per season, while current schedules may also require an initial oil and filter change following the engine break-in period. Always follow the service schedule issued for the exact engine model.
Earlier replacement may be appropriate following:
- Fuel, coolant, water or debris contamination
- Internal engine repairs
- Abnormal oil-pressure conditions
- Extended high-load operation
- Long periods of seasonal storage
- Visible filter corrosion, denting or leakage
Installation Notes
Shut down the engine, allow it to cool and follow the Steyr service procedure before removing the existing filter.
- Remove the old filter and confirm that its sealing gasket has not remained attached to the mounting surface.
- Clean the filter head and inspect it for damage or corrosion.
- Lightly lubricate the new filter gasket with clean engine oil.
- Install the filter by hand according to the Steyr service instructions.
- Refill the engine with the specified grade and quantity of oil.
- Start the engine and verify normal oil pressure.
- Inspect the filter and sealing surface for leaks.
- Shut down the engine, allow the oil to settle and recheck the oil level.

Parts Desk Insight
Four-cylinder Steyr fitment is relatively straightforward, but the six-cylinder cutoff matters. Checking the engine model and serial number before ordering is the safest way to avoid supplying this filter for a later MO6, MO286 or MO306 installation.
