What This Hose Is For

Trident Series 317 is a USCG Type A2 marine fuel and vent hose built for gasoline vent lines and diesel fuel feed or vent applications. Its NBR tube and NBR/PVC cover meet the fire resistance, fuel permeation, and pressure requirements of SAE J1527 and ISO 7840, and Trident rates it for gasoline including ethanol blends, as well as diesel and biodiesel blends up to 100%.

Important: Series 317 is Type A2 — rated for gasoline vent and diesel feed/vent service. It is not a substitute for Type A1 hose where the installation or applicable standard specifically requires Type A1 fuel-feed hose. Confirm the correct hose type for your application before ordering.

Compatible Applications

  • Gasoline fuel vent lines (USCG Type A2 rated)
  • Gasoline systems with ethanol-blended fuel (E10 and higher)
  • Diesel fuel feed lines
  • Diesel fuel vent lines
  • Biodiesel blends up to 100%
  • Marine fuel system plumbing where 5/8 in. ID hose is specified

Standards & Approvals

  • USCG Type A2
  • SAE J1527 (meets/exceeds)
  • ISO 7840 (meets)
  • ABYC H-24 (exceeds)
  • ABYC H-33 (exceeds)
  • NMMA Type Accepted
  • CE Certified
  • Lloyd’s Register Type Approved

Fitment Notice

Confirm the following before ordering:

  • Required hose ID is 5/8 inch
  • Fuel type is gasoline (including ethanol blends) or diesel/biodiesel
  • Application is suitable for Type A2 hose — do not substitute Type A2 where the installation specifically requires Type A1
  • Installation temperature does not exceed 212°F / 100°C continuously
  • Applicable ABYC and USCG requirements for the fuel system type

When to Replace

  • Cracking, hardening, or surface checking in the outer cover
  • Soft, swollen, or delaminated areas
  • Fuel seepage, fuel odor, or visible weeping
  • Abrasion through the outer cover
  • Kinking or collapse that restricts flow
  • Clamp band corrosion or damage
  • Age-related deterioration during inspection

Installation Notes

  • Use fittings sized for 5/8-inch ID hose
  • Secure with marine-grade fuel hose clamps at both ends
  • Maintain a minimum bend radius of 3 in. / 76.2 mm — do not route tighter than this
  • Route away from hot exhaust components and heat sources
  • Avoid abrasion contact points — protect the hose where it passes through bulkheads or over edges
  • Support long hose runs to prevent sagging or unsupported spans
  • Route vent hose so fuel cannot become trapped in a low point that blocks tank venting
  • Do not overtighten clamps — excess compression can damage the hose wall

Service Interval

Inspect marine fuel hose annually or at each haul-out as part of routine fuel-system maintenance. On gasoline vessels, also inspect any time fuel odor is detected in the bilge. Replace at the first sign of cracking, weeping, swelling, or clamp damage. ABYC and USCG guidelines recommend fuel hose inspection as part of annual marine service.

Technical FAQ

What is the difference between Type A1 and Type A2 hose?
USCG Type A1 hose is rated for fuel-feed applications including below-deck fuel-fill lines where a higher level of fire resistance is required. Type A2 hose is rated for gasoline vent lines and fuel-distribution lines where the A1 level is not required. Confirm which type your application and applicable standards specify before selecting hose.

Is this hose compatible with ethanol-blended gasoline?
Yes. Trident rates Series 317 for gasoline including ethanol blends. The NBR tube is resistant to ethanol-blend fuels used in marine applications.

Is Series 317 compatible with biodiesel?
Yes. Trident specifies Series 317 for biodiesel blends including B100.

What clamp type should I use?
Use marine-grade worm-drive hose clamps (stainless) appropriate for fuel service. Do not use ear clamps or non-marine clamps on fuel lines. Follow ABYC H-33 clamping requirements for the installation.

Can I use this hose for fuel fill lines?
Series 317 is Type A2. Fuel fill lines may require Type A1 hose depending on the installation and applicable standards. Confirm the USCG and ABYC requirements for your specific installation before using Type A2 hose on a fill line.

Parts Desk Insights

The 317-0586 is the right product when 5/8-inch Type A2 fuel hose is what the installation calls for — primarily gasoline vent lines and diesel feed or vent runs. The standards list is comprehensive (SAE J1527, ISO 7840, ABYC H-24, H-33, NMMA, CE, Lloyd’s), which matters when a surveyor is involved. The most common ordering issue is Type A1 vs. A2 confusion: customers sometimes reach for the first marine fuel hose they find without confirming the type. Ask whether the application is a vent line or a fill/feed line — fill lines on gasoline vessels typically require A1, not A2.
