Warning: This is a critical engine timing component. Incorrect installation can cause serious internal engine damage.
Verify camshaft and engine timing before removing the original pulley. Use the correct 985373 screws — four required — and do not reuse fasteners from the earlier 8631554 configuration. Inspect the toothed timing belts for cracks, missing teeth, contamination, or glazing and inspect the idler and tensioner assembly at the same time. Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshaft independently unless the Volvo Penta service procedure specifically permits it. Follow the applicable Volvo Penta D3 workshop manual for timing alignment procedures and fastener torque specifications.

If you’re ordering for an early D3 without knowing the serial, confirm it before ordering — these are two different pulleys. The hardware change matters too: Volvo Penta specifies four 985373 screws with 8642804, so if you’re upgrading from the older pulley, the fasteners need to come with it. Since the timing belt and tensioner have to come off to access this pulley, it’s worth doing the full timing-belt service at the same time — the incremental cost of belts and tensioner is small compared with the labour of coming back in for a belt service on a freshly assembled engine.
