The Volvo Penta 22452005 is a genuine Volvo Penta OEM hydraulic steering cylinder used on select Volvo Penta sterndrive and transom shield steering systems. This cylinder acts as a hydraulic steering ram, connecting the steering system to the drive's steering linkage so hydraulic pressure can move the drive smoothly from side to side. It is used where the Volvo Penta parts diagram specifically calls for 22452005 and is commonly associated with heavy-duty DPH, DPR, and DPI steering applications.
Key Features
- Genuine Volvo Penta factory OEM hydraulic steering cylinder.
- Volvo Penta part number: 22452005.
- External hydraulic steering actuator for select sterndrive/transom shield systems.
- Helps restore proper steering control when the original cylinder is leaking, corroded, binding, or worn.
- Used on select mechanical/hydraulic steering configurations where specified by Volvo Penta diagram.
- Commonly associated with DPH, DPR, and DPI drive/transom shield assemblies.
- Replaces earlier Volvo Penta steering cylinder references where confirmed by serial number and parts diagram.
Application Compatibility
Common where-used application groups include select Volvo Penta sterndrive and transom shield assemblies by drive model, serial number, steering system, and diagram location, including:
- DPH-A / DPH-B / DPH-C / DPH-D / DPH-D1 / DPH-E applications where specified
- DPR-A / DPR-B / DPR-C / DPR-D applications where specified
- DPI-A applications where specified
- TSK DPH-B transom shield assemblies where specified
- TSK DPH-E transom shield assemblies where specified
- TSK DPI-A transom shield assemblies where specified
- Select Volvo Penta diesel and sterndrive packages using the matching hydraulic steering cylinder layout
Use this cylinder only where the Volvo Penta parts diagram specifically calls for 22452005.
Fitment Notice
Confirm fitment by Volvo Penta drive model, drive serial number, transom shield type, steering system configuration, port/starboard cylinder position, and exact parts diagram before ordering. Volvo Penta used different steering cylinders, hose fittings, mounting pins, seals, and steering layouts across similar DPH, DPR, and DPI drive families. This part should not be selected by drive family alone.
When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the steering cylinder if hydraulic fluid is leaking from the rod seal, hose fittings, or cylinder body, if the steering feels loose or uneven, if the ram rod is pitted or corroded, or if the cylinder binds during steering movement. Replacement may also be required when the drive will not hold steering position, when there is excessive play at the steering linkage, or when the cylinder has been damaged by corrosion, impact, or failed seals.
Installation Notes
Inspect the steering cylinder mounting pins, bushings, retaining hardware, hose fittings, hydraulic lines, steering linkage, and transom shield connection points during replacement. If the steering system uses paired cylinders, inspect both sides closely because the opposite cylinder may have similar age, seal wear, or rod corrosion. After installation, bleed the hydraulic steering system fully and cycle the drive from lock to lock according to the Volvo Penta service procedure to remove trapped air before returning the boat to service.

Parts Desk Insight
Hydraulic steering cylinders should be matched by drive serial number, transom shield, and steering layout. A similar-looking ram may have different hose fittings, stroke, mounting geometry, or port/starboard configuration. When one cylinder has failed from seal wear or rod corrosion, inspect the opposite cylinder and steering hardware before reassembly to avoid a second steering-system teardown.
