About This Part

Genuine Volvo Penta 3850424 is an OEM O-ring used at fuel-line and fuel-cell connections on selected Volvo Penta gasoline EFI engines. Volvo Penta fuel-system diagrams place 3850424 directly at fuel hose and fuel pipe connection points, where it provides the seal between the fuel-line fitting and the adjoining fuel-system component. A Volvo Penta service bulletin specifically identifies 3850424 as the O-ring involved in certain fuel-cell leak repair procedures on GXi-family engines, making correct part identification and installation especially important. Note that nearby O-ring 3850423 seals a different connection in the same diagram — these are not interchangeable.

Compatible Applications

  • Volvo Penta 4.3GiPEFS — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Volvo Penta 4.3GXi-GF — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Volvo Penta 5.0GiPEFS — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Volvo Penta 5.7GXi-EF — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Volvo Penta 8.1GXi-DF — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Volvo Penta 8.1OSi-AF — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Volvo Penta 8.1Gi-EF — fuel line/fuel cell O-ring position
  • Selected 3.0GXi, 4.3Gi, 4.3GL, 4.3GS fuel-system and intake-manifold diagram positions

Confirm engine model, serial number, and the exact fuel-line diagram position before ordering. Volvo Penta uses several different O-rings within these fuel systems — 3850423 and 3850424 appear next to each other in several diagrams but seal different connections.

When to Replace

Replace this O-ring whenever the fuel-line connection is opened for service, and any time the existing seal shows:

  • Flattening or permanent compression set
  • Cuts, nicks, or cracks
  • Hardening from age or heat exposure
  • Swelling or chemical damage from fuel contact
  • Visible or suspected fuel seepage at the connection

A compromised O-ring at a pressurized gasoline fuel connection should never be reused.

Installation Notes

Clean the fuel-line fitting and mating sealing surface thoroughly before installation. Confirm the new O-ring matches the original before installing. Seat the O-ring correctly — ensure it is not twisted or pinched while reconnecting the fuel line. Because this seal is part of the pressurized gasoline fuel system, inspect the connection carefully for leaks after service and follow the applicable Volvo Penta fuel-system pressure-relief and leak-check procedure before returning the engine to operation.

Cross-Reference Part Numbers

  • OEM: 3850424
  • Related (different position): 3850423 — adjacent O-ring in the same fuel-system diagram; seals a different connection and is not interchangeable with 3850424
  • Note: No confirmed Volvo Penta OEM superseding number identified in current parts references.

Parts Desk Insight

This is one of the most commonly confused O-rings in Volvo Penta GXi fuel-system service because 3850423 and 3850424 sit adjacent to each other in the parts diagram and are both small fuel-system seals. They seal different connection points and are not interchangeable — matching by diagram position is the only reliable method. If this O-ring is being replaced as part of a fuel-cell leak repair, confirm the service bulletin procedure applies to your engine serial number before ordering, as the fuel-cell assembly configuration can vary between production runs.
