When This Part Needs Replacement
Replace the spider when inspection reveals any of the following:
- Excessive movement or looseness in the universal joint
- Rough, notched, or binding movement through the joint
- Rust or corrosion around the bearing caps
- Damaged or missing retaining rings
- Vibration or driveline noise
- Water intrusion caused by a failed U-joint bellows
The spider should also be inspected whenever the drive is removed for bellows, gimbal bearing, or engine-alignment service.
Installation Notes
Sterndrive removal and partial disassembly of the universal-joint assembly are required. While access is available, inspect both spiders, the yokes, bearing-cap bores, retaining-ring grooves, U-joint bellows, and gimbal bearing. Replace any distorted retaining rings. Follow the Volvo Penta service manual for assembly, lubrication, and driveline-alignment procedures. After installation, verify the joint pivots smoothly through its full operating range without binding or excessive play.
