What This Kit Does

The 3888916 is the OEM exhaust bellows kit for selected Volvo Penta SX-A, DPS-A, DPS-B, and FWD sterndrive applications. It forms the flexible exhaust connection between the transom pivot housing and the sterndrive unit, directing exhaust flow while accommodating the full range of drive trim and steering movement. The kit includes the exhaust bellows and the clamps needed for a complete replacement.

Important: This is the later SX-A/DPS-family kit. Earlier SX, DP-S, and DP-SM drives use a different exhaust bellows β€” Volvo Penta Exhaust Bellows 3850426. Always confirm your drive model before ordering.

Compatible Applications

  • Volvo Penta SX-A
  • Volvo Penta DPS-A
  • Volvo Penta DPS-A OXi
  • Volvo Penta DPS-B
  • Volvo Penta DPS-B OX
  • Volvo Penta DPS-D
  • Volvo Penta FWD-B1 / FWD-B2
  • Volvo Penta FWD-D1 / FWD-D2

Fitment is drive-specific. Confirm the sterndrive model, drive serial number, and transom-shield configuration before ordering. Volvo Penta uses different exhaust bellows across its sterndrive families and some configurations look similar but are not interchangeable.

Service Interval

Volvo Penta recommends inspecting all sterndrive bellows annually and replacing them on a scheduled basis β€” typically every 3 years or as specified in the service manual for your drive model. Rubber bellows degrade with UV exposure, heat cycling, and flex fatigue regardless of hours. Replace sooner if any cracking, stiffness, or leakage is found during inspection.

When to Replace

  • Rubber is cracked, hardened, split, or visibly deteriorated
  • Clamps are corroded or no longer secure the bellows properly
  • Exhaust gases or water leakage visible at the transom or pivot housing
  • Bellows is distorted or torn
  • Drive service already requires access to this area
  • Bellows age or service history is unknown

Installation Notes

Inspect the mating necks, clamp grooves, and surrounding pivot-housing hardware before installing the new bellows. Remove corrosion or deposits that could prevent a proper seat. Install in the orientation specified by the Volvo Penta service procedure and verify the bellows is not twisted or over-stretched through the drive’s full steering and trim range. While this area is accessible, also inspect the gimbal bearing, U-joint bellows, and seawater intake hose β€” Volvo Penta identifies these as neighboring maintenance items for SX-A and DPS-family drives.

Technical FAQ

Q: Does 3888916 replace 3841293?
A: Yes. Volvo Penta 3888916 is the current part, superseding the earlier 3841293.

Q: Will this kit fit my older SX / DP-S drive?
A: No. Earlier SX, DP-S, and DP-SM drives use exhaust bellows 3850426. The 3888916 kit is specific to the later SX-A and DPS-family drives.

Q: Does the kit include the clamps?
A: Yes β€” the kit includes both the exhaust bellows and the clamps required for installation.

Parts Desk Insights

The most common ordering mistake with exhaust bellows is selecting by appearance rather than drive model. The 3888916 belongs to the SX-A/DPS family β€” if the customer has an older SX, DP-S, or DP-SM drive, they need 3850426 instead. When the exhaust bellows is being replaced, it’s worth checking the U-joint bellows and gimbal bearing at the same time since access overlaps and these are all scheduled maintenance items on the same service interval.
