What This Kit Does
This is the genuine Volvo Penta OEM zinc anode kit for IPS drive lower gear units. Sacrificial zinc anodes are designed to corrode in place of the surrounding metal, protecting the lower gear housing, propellers, shafts, and underwater drive components from galvanic and stray current corrosion. Zinc is the correct anode material for saltwater environments. Running without serviceable anodes — or with the wrong type — leaves expensive IPS drive components exposed to accelerated corrosion.

Why zinc and not aluminum or magnesium?
Zinc anodes are optimized for saltwater environments. Aluminum anodes are preferred for freshwater, and magnesium for freshwater with very low conductivity. Using the wrong anode material can result in under-protection or, in some cases, accelerated corrosion of the protected components.
Can I replace just one anode instead of the full kit?
Replacing the full kit at the same time is strongly recommended. Mixing anodes at different stages of consumption creates uneven protection — the newer anodes will carry more of the load and may deplete faster, leaving gaps in coverage.
How do I know if my anodes are working?
Healthy anodes show even, chalky corrosion across the surface. Anodes that are barely consumed may indicate a bonding problem or stray current issue. Anodes that are consumed very quickly may indicate high stray current in the marina — both situations are worth investigating before the next haul-out.
